King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark are on a five-day state visit to Australia. On the evening of the second day of their Melbourne visit, the King and Queen hosted a reception at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne. Among those attending the reception were Australia’s Governor-General, Sam Mostyn, and the Governor of Victoria, Margaret Gardner, and her husband, Professor Glyn Davis.
Zimmermann Kaleidoscope Dress

Another well fitting Zimmermann dress for Mary, and I'll even take the style-driven wrist frills (complete with baby pom-poms) with a grain of salt.
ReplyDeleteIt appears from the men's wear that the event was informal, but Frederik looks less than informal. Almost dishevelled. A smart, structured blazer would have been perfect as the host.

I agree that Mary looks great but think Frederik looks fantastic too. His suit is a great colour and extremely neat cut. I don’t think it’s remotely disheveled. Especially in contrast to most of the other poorly cut suits on display on men in this photo, his is particularly elegant.
DeleteI am surprised by Frederick’s choices more often than not. This time is no exception. You are right, just a better quality, perhaps darker colour, jacket (or even better, a suit, no tie necessary) would have aligned so nicely with Mary’s elegance.
DeleteSpeaking of Mary, how lovely is she? She remains the original and still the best diplomatic dresser in my opinion. Doesn’t go overboard with dramatic stuff or seek unnecessary attention. Just pure class. Hat off from me.

@Anon 14:57 CH Thanks for your comment. I agree with all that you said.

Mary is a superstar!
ReplyDeleteYes, she is!
DeleteOn this first picture is QM laughing with her dear friend Amber Petty, looks like they are having a good time.
ReplyDeleteFrederik's suit is simply bad tailoring, bad fitting, always a ta too tight across the breast, throwing wrinkles and almost always too long trousers. - I don't like this Zimmermann dress at all, but Mary looks good in it - probably much better for other commenters who like this style and the colouring for this overall pattern. The pom-poms - OK but at least on the hem they should go away.
ReplyDeleteI think Frederik’s suit is beautifully tailored and he’s hit just the right tone. Very styling European look in contrast to the less well cut Australian suits (because unfortunately we don’t have the same elegance in suits here and to import high quality ones is frightfully expensive).

DeleteI do not agree with you. Frederik's suits are not a good example for European men's fashion. I am afraid I must agree with @ Anon. 17:34
Frederick is famous for being a bad dresser. This is just the same. The ridiculous popping button of all his jackets even had at some point an Instagram account.
DeleteI like the scruffy look on him. Shows he hasn't the "look at me, ME" He looks like every man around town
ReplyDelete100% Agreed.
DeleteI agree.

DeleteHe can look scruffy as much as he likes in his free time, but being a king and representing his country on a state visit he could at least do a little effort. Only his uniform is looking ironed and well looked after. I don't see why his normal day look must be scruffy. He has thick and a bit curly hair but it looks always unkempt. If he was a queen or a princess he would receive tons of remarks. Looking scruffy is not a quality you know, at least it is not what we expect from a royal on duty.
He is a king and not every man around town so he has to stand out more. In this case he has adopted a twin look with his wife, which is what the emperor of Japan does, not bad.

Beautiful dress! Lovely color for her. And Mary seems natural, relaxed and happy.
ReplyDeleteAgree on all points

QM brought her best Zimmerman dresses with her to wear during this state visit. The dress fits but I don't like the light brown color.
ReplyDeleteKing Frederik's brown suit does not look attractive to me. The least he could do is comb his hair. He probably favors the just out of bed style.
Une autre robe Zimmermann qui convient bien à Mary surtout dans ces couleurs dégradées de marron ; par contre, je ne suis pas trop fan des poignets volantés !
ReplyDeleteMary looks so fabulous in this dress. Pure elegance. They both look so happy. I must say she is looking so much brighter in the face than the first few days of her visit. Just maybe she wasn’t feeling well.
ReplyDeleteI love the dress and it fits QM perfectly. I might have lost the frills on the wrist.
ReplyDeleteI honestly believe QM is the only royal who really walks the talk on fashion sustainability. You rarely see her in a new wardrobe of clothes. She I believe is also conscious of the cost of living, and doesn’t want to come across as spending unnecessarily. I admire that.
Lowri.
I agree with you, Lowri. She actually does set an example for sustainability.
DeleteShe looks better every day.
ReplyDeleteLovely dress and color on QM but the sleeves ruin the look for me. Too froo-froo and not needed. She is also looking 35 again lately! MR
ReplyDeleteI have never been a fan of Zimmerman's frilly floaty florals - but I admit that the core elements of this design work perfectly for Mary. The circle-cut cuffs are a rather unwieldy, but the pompom trimming is a light and fun touch. A great summer evening look. Lyra
ReplyDeleteThis Zimmerman dress is quite beautiful. I saw a photo close up of the dress, it has beautiful interesting features up close, which surprised me, I didn't notice them, from the obvious photos. Very feminine and elegant. Imo, the dress fits well and the design, is gorgeous, elegant and flattering, very feminine. Love the color of her shoes. One of the Queen's closet Aussie friends was at this event, lovely for them both to meet up. Amber Petty is a lovely lady.
ReplyDeleteQueen Mary looks very pretty in this very feminine dress. It fits her like a glove. She is really glowing at this dinner. In fact, both Mary and Frederik look very happy and relaxed on this trip.

Queen Mary is such a style icon. King Frederik is great his speeches are so good. (Tara)
ReplyDelete@17.34 - would have written the same myself.
ReplyDeleteI find Zimmermann often too frilly, flouncy, trying too hard to be retro, and this dress I such an example. The trim on the neckline is fine but on the hem makes me think of a 1930's lampshade, there would be better balance if the sleeves were shorter with the frill placed just below the elbow, the colour and material look good.
Très joli, en particulier pour le buste de la robe mais je n'aime pas les manches à volants. Par expérience, c'est très mal commode.
