On Thursday, 12 February, 400 representatives from politics, business, and the volunteer sector attended the opening of the International Year of the Volunteer 2026 in the host city of Utrecht. Queen Máxima performed the official opening at the Stadsschouwburg theatre in Utrecht. This year’s theme is “the Power of Action.”

The International Year of the Volunteer was proclaimed by the United Nations in recognition of the indispensable role volunteers play in strengthening social cohesion, promoting livelihood security, and building a just, resilient, and sustainable society. Volunteers make a significant contribution to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
