The Japanese Imperial Family Attends the First New Year Lecture of 2026

On January 9, 2026, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended the traditional New Year ceremony known as Kōsho Hajime no Gi. The annual ceremony, at which the Emperor and Empress receive lectures from leading scholars, was held in the Matsu-no-Ma (Pine Chamber) of the Imperial Palace. Prince Hisahito attended the ceremony for the first time.

Members of the Imperial Family, including Princess Aiko, Crown Prince Fumihito, Princess Kiko, Princess Kako, Princess Akiko, Princess Yoko, Princess Hisako, and Princess Tsuguko, were also in attendance. Three scholars delivered lectures, including Takashi Mikuriya, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo.

    The Empress looks wonderful. All ladies are elegant in their very typical Japanese high fashion style. Good reminder how slowing our quest for new and shiny things (in general, clothes included) might in the end be the better avenue.

  2. A room full of elegance and quiet style. Each imperial lady looks beautiful. The Empress looks gorgeous. I love her gown. Its lovely to see some variations in colors with the gowns. Beautiful presentation from the imperial ladies.
