On January 6, 2026, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, accompanied by Princess Leonor, attended the traditional celebration of the Military Easter (Pascua Militar) at the Royal Palace of Madrid. This solemn military ceremony marks the beginning of the military year. The origins of the Military Easter date back to the reign of Charles III, when, on January 6, 1782, the town of Mahón on the island of Menorca was recovered from British control.

      Pascua is derived from Hebrew “Passover” and is more aligned with “liberation ” in word meaning (in this case re the English leaving Minorca, a Spanish balearic island). The translation from Pascua to Easter doesn’t work. Not all foreign words can be translated successfully, and something like google translate doesn’t have the sophistication to interpret such words. Always worth looking a bit further to understand.

      Pascua" en español puede referirse a Pascua de Resurrección (Easter), pero en "Pascua Militar" se usa en su sentido más antiguo de celebración o fiesta, una tradición instituida por Carlos III en 1782, según Ministerio de Defensa.
