King Carl XVI Gustaf’s sister, Princess Désirée, Baroness Silfverschiöld, passed away peacefully at her home at Koberg in Västergötland on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. She was 87 years old. Princess Désirée was born on June 2, 1938, at Haga Palace as the third daughter of Hereditary Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla.
Princess Désirée grew up at Haga Palace together with her four siblings: Princess Margaretha, Princess Birgitta, Princess Christina, and Crown Prince Carl (XVI) Gustaf. She was named after the consort of King Charles XIV John. Désirée trained as a preschool teacher and worked in preschool education on Kungsholmen before her marriage.
In 1964, Désirée married Baron Niclas Silfverschiöld (1934–2017), and the couple settled at Koberg Castle in Västergötland. They had three children: Carl, Christina Louise, and Hélène. Princess Désirée devoted most of her time to her family, which she valued deeply, though she occasionally took part in inaugurations and award ceremonies. Widowed in 2017, she spent her final years at Koberg.
