From 24 to 27 November, Dutch Queen Máxima is making a four-day working visit to Indonesia in her capacity as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA). On November 24, Queen Máxima arrived at Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Indonesia, where she was welcomed by Friderica Widyasari Dewi, Member of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority of Indonesia.
During her visit, Queen Máxima will meet with public- and private-sector leaders, as well as Indonesians from diverse backgrounds, to learn about financial health challenges and opportunities. On Tuesday, Queen Máxima will begin the day with field visits around the city of Surakarta, also known as Solo. Afterwards, the Queen will visit a traditional batik workshop, where she will speak with women entrepreneurs.

حذفOh Maxima. You could have done better for an honor guard welcome. Your loafers and way too casual suit is not a satisfactory outfit for this occasion. Look at the lady who welcomed her and how well and elegant she is dressed. The Queen looks tired - obvious long flight - but fresh make up and a nice outfit would have helped.

حذفShe knows the requirements far better than any other here. If she’s just stepped off a business class airline flight which is I think her normal when travelling without the king, the chance to change is very limited. We must be understanding about the reality of intercontinental flights!

حذفI love that we see Maxima here not on any royal engagement, but as a normal, working woman for the UN. Her attire is spot-on in this regard (I like her jacket and sleeves). The perils of air travel seem to be evident in the slight puffiness on her face and feet. Rest, and acclimatization to the heat and humidity of Indonesia in the hours and days ahead should take care of this as we all know from experience at some point or other.

حذفI agree with 20:33, look at the lady who greeted her, Maxima looks quite a right mess compared to that lady. She can dress/look nice when she feels like it, but as a wife of a King, she should make the effort ALL the time, not just when it suits her.
حذفIf you read the Dutch sites about Queen Maxima you would know why she wore cropped pants (culottes). It is because she wear compression stockings during the flight and it is much more easy to take them off or put them on with cropped pants than with long pants.
حذفThe missions for the UN are always using business class. From Queen Maxima I don't know but from Queen Mathilde when she is travelling for the UN she is in business class with the press, a Belgian royalty watcher, her hairdresser, sometimes other Belgian politicians, a secretary, etc... We never see her departure but we always see when she is arriving. I often wonder if she changed clothes in the plane like she does when she is going on state visit with King Philippe in a plane of the Belgian defence forces or in a private jet or in the plane which is called "Air Belgium". Many possibilities depending on the destination.
The bottom half of the outfit does her no favours. She looks short and dumpy.

ردحذفThe contrast between the attire of the Commissioner and the Queen could hardly be more stark.
Colour -- I am more used to seeing neutrals on Charlene, where they suit her more reserved personality, rather than on this extroverted Queen. I don't think I've seen Maxima wear black in a daywear suit or frock outside of memorial/funerary occasions.
Design and shape -- I am all in favour of trendy fashions as long as they make the wearer look fabulous. However IMO the pants shape doesn't harmonise with the jacket; a pencil skirt would probably look better -- especially as the flared jacket sleeves next to the huge pockets creates a horizontal line of bulk across the middle.
Jewellery -- this may be the first time I have ever seen Maxima without earrings. And no ring on her right hand either. Yet it seems after her arrival she went straight into a meeting. I realise that she had just got off what was no doubt a long international flight, but was there no time to put on her jewellery? was she too tired? I've never seen her adopt a look so minimalist.
Shirt -- the crumply cotton fabric is too casual for business wear. There are lots of non-crush fabrics which work better for travel.
Shoes -- these are too casual in style to work well with the suit. I have an almost identical pair which I wear only at home. But perhaps Maxima's dressier shoes weren't comfortable to put on, after the long flight....
Going straight into a meeting after a tiring long flight requires dress solutions which balance comfort with style; I hope Maxima will find that blend of both. Lyra

Oufff, that’s such a hard flight. Europe - Asia you normally arrive to start the new day in Asia without having felt tired enough in the flight to really sleep (even with a lie-flat bed!). Just as you’re ready for a European sleep time, your aircraft is ready for descent. Then you get off the plane having come from the cold and even though you’re straight into an aircon airport, the humidity and heat feel crazy hot. It’s impossible to look at your most elegant and refined for this sector and arrival. Full admiration to anyone who sits straight down to business - and most of us don’t need to do it with cameras flashing in our faces!

ردحذفOh, I don't know what I'm seeing. How did you come up with this, the unflattering pants with chunky shoes? I should have just worn thin, long pants or a light skirt with attractive flats. I live in The Hague, the Netherlands, and I occasionally see her without makeup. She's completely unrecognizable then, which isn't a problem, because I wouldn't always want to walk around with all that makeup either.

She arrived to work with a developing nation on sustainable finance. Think how you yourselves might have arrived in the same circumstances and be much kinder about the realities of life.

حذفI sympathise with her shoes. I have made the trip from Scandinavia to Jakarta many times and it is a looong and gruelling flight. Even if you are in business class and can put your feet up they only fit into your largest pair of unlaced trainers on arrival.

ردحذفIt’s not so much an official meeting as a working meeting. If you’ve done a lot of business in the middle of south east Asia you’ll appreciate how hard it is to get outfits right. Sticky, steamy, very relaxed dress codes. A suit with culottes is a pretty good idea.

ردحذفShe’s often overdressed for the occasion. I think she likes fashion and jewellery but I guess isn’t to much occupied with what to wear in what situation. This suit would be fine as a business outfit for someone working in fashion, art …. and also maybe someone with another bodytype. I like that she not scared to at least try something new, but it didn’t work out this time.

It is indeed gruelling for passengers, no matter if they are royals or not.
They are human beings first and foremost.

The lady welcoming her is certainly fresh and impeccabile.
Maybe because she already lives there and hasn't just got off a plane, sleepless and with her feet swollen and most probably aching?!
Maxima must have not have enough time to change into something pleasing the fashionistas on this site or must have had some work done on her face while on the plane, yes!

ردحذفOnto actual fashion. I cannot follow Maxima’s decision process for this outfit. Heat, flight, need for comfortable shoes… whatever the situation was, it’s a misjudged decision. Unless it has a special meaning, this outfit is quite odd. Maybe it was gifted by the host nation. Or maybe there is something in Indonesian history that makes it appropriate. Otherwise - it’s a complete miss for me.
