King Felipe and Queen Letizia are undertaking a three-day State Visit to China. On November 11, 2025, Queen Letizia of Spain attended a cultural event at Wangjianglou Park, one of Chengdu’s most emblematic cultural landmarks, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Antonio Machado. The event took place at the “Poet Xue Tao Memorial,” dedicated to one of the most widely read and translated Spanish authors in China.

During the ceremony, Antonio Machado’s poem “To a Dry Elm”, written in Soria in 1912, and two short poems by Xue Tao — “The Festival of the Ninth Day” and “Peonies” — were read in both Chinese and Spanish. Afterwards, the Queen met with poets, writers, and artists, including the Hispanist Zhao Zhenjiang, who translated Machado’s poem into Chinese in 2007 for the Bilingual Anthology of Antonio Machado.
