The Emperor and Princess Aiko Attend the Autumn Gagaku Performance

Emperor Naruhito and his daughter, Princess Aiko, attended the Autumn Gagaku

On October 26, 2025, Emperor Naruhito and his daughter, Princess Aiko, attended the Autumn Gagaku (traditional Japanese court music) concert performed by the Music Department of the Imperial Household Agency at the Imperial Palace. They listened attentively to the elegant sounds of traditional instruments such as the wagon (Japanese harp) and hichiriki (double-reed flute), played by musicians dressed in traditional garments, and offered their applause.

The performance featured the ancient Japanese dance Kume-mai and continental-style bugaku dances. Gagaku is a form of Japanese classical music that has been performed at the imperial court since the Heian period (794–1185). It was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property by the Japanese government in 1955.

  4. Cette couleur jaune pâle tirant sur l'ivoire convient à ravir à la princesse Aiko à l'unisson avec la cravate de son papa qui est toujours tiré à quatre épingles !

  6. During the reign of the current Emperor's father, Emperor Akihito, all members of the Imperial Family would attend the gagaku (traditional Japanese court music) performances together. Now, it seems they no longer attend as a group.

Since this venue is located within the Imperial Palace grounds, I believe one cannot attend the performance without an invitation from Emperor Naruhito or Empress Masako.
I also would have liked to see news reports about Princess Hisako and Princess Akiko, who attended this performance on the 24th and 25th.

  7. It’s so lovely to see the princess in such a lovely and flattering color. The Emperor matching in his yellow tie is an added bonus.
