  1. its the duty of the Imperial ladies to preserve the culture of Japan, but the guests seem to be more respectful of that culture by wearing traditional kimonos, which are far more beautiful than the outfits the Imperial family are wearing.

  4. It is amazing how of the two red suits, one looks more youthful in its design. So nice to see Aiko in a dark colour, and her two tone shoes, wow what a pleasant surprise. The side closure of the jacket on the empress is nice along with the piping. So many suits, all in the signature style of the Japanese court yet all so different and elegant.

  5. I must say, everyone looks splendid ♥️ but my favorite is Aiko’s vibrant red (what would it be called — cranberry?) outfit. Head-to-toe perfection; she looks stylish and adorable. — Jane

  6. Mostly a typical fashion outing!
I do, however, always love how the emperor wears a tie matching his wife's dress!
Princess Kiko looks adorable - that wide skirt gives her outfit a little playfulness! And, as always, her smile is contagious!
Another standout is the princess (anyone know her name?) wearing the lovely pink suit: beautiful colour!

    1. I think the Princess in the Pink Suit is Princess Tsuguko of Takamado and her mother is the Princes in the Jade Green suit next to her, Hisako, Princess Takamado.

  7. I didn't know the Japanese royals had garden parties. Pardon my ignorance, but I thought it was a British royal custom. It's the same with the hats. I thought It was more of a British thing. I stand corrected as everyone including the gentlemen look so formal and smartly dressed. 1500 guests! Very impressive.

  8. I didn´t realize the Japanese did garden parties.
The ladies´ suits are nice designs but I think that often have a poor fit. Too long, too loose, too wide shoulders, too long sleeves (and simply folding them up is a surprisingly imperfect makeshift solution). I like Kako´s red suit best.

    1. I suppose the design intent is not to accentuate any part of the body in public. No mishaps bending over or bowing from the front or back.

    2. 17:31 I agree. And Vanessa I don’t think it’s a poor fit rather than a fit for another culture. I think it’s also due to these being mostly dress plus jacket as opposed to skirt plus jacket. The dress is cut beautifully to gently follow the shape of the wearer without being so tight so that it is seemly when worn without the jacket - but when the jacket is added over the dress, it holds the waist in so it changes how the dress hangs.

  9. As always HM looks impeccable. I love how the jacket trim carries into the trim of her hat. Beautiful Pearl earrings and necklace. Such grace and elegance.
It’s lovely seeing the younger princesses attend the event. It looks like the cousins have matched in their red.
    Lowri.

  10. Kako is adorable as always, but this time Aiko is her equal in the choice and fit of their outfits. As to the guests being "more respectful" to tradition than the ladies of the imperial family by wearing kimonos - rest assured, @ Anon 13:19, that they know exactly well how to behave respectfully towards Japanese tradition (maybe they even know better than you :-).

  11. The Empress looks beautiful, great dress, and gorgeous jacket, love the style of this immensely. The jacket trim is very effective and looks beautiful.
The color is sublime. Her pearl necklace, fits perfectly nice and snug, very elegant look. Princess Kako looks delightful. Love this outfit, she looks so sweet. The Japanese traditional of Kimonos worn by the guests looks beautiful, respectful and attired.
