On October 30, 2025, Queen Sofía of Spain visited the Embassy of the Kingdom of Thailand in Madrid, where she signed the book of condolences following the passing of Queen Sirikit of Thailand. Upon her arrival at the diplomatic mission, Queen Sofía was welcomed by the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Thailand in Spain, Ms. Supamas Yunyasit.
Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara, born in Bangkok in 1932, was the wife of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and the mother of the current monarch, King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X). She passed away on Friday, October 24, at the age of 93, at Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok, where she had been hospitalised since 2019.
For more than six decades, Queen Sirikit was a symbol of unity and social commitment. She promoted rural development projects, supported local crafts, and championed environmental conservation — earning the affection of the Thai people and the respect of the international community. In 1956, she temporarily assumed the role of Regent, a historic moment that demonstrated her leadership and devotion to the nation.
