On October 21, 2025, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia attended the presentation of the 2025 Birgit Nilsson Prize at the Stockholm Concert Hall. The Festival d’Aix-en-Provence was honored with the 2025 Birgit Nilsson Prize for its artistic excellence and commitment to developing new opera productions, with special recognition for the 2021 world premiere of Innocence, with music by Kaija Saariaho and an original libretto by Sofi Oksanen.

At the official ceremony, the King presented the Prize to Sophie Joissains, Mayor of Aix-en-Provence, and Paul Hermelin, Chair of the Festival’s Board. Birgit Nilsson (1918–2005) was one of the greatest opera singers of the twentieth century. The Birgit Nilsson Prize is awarded approximately every three years and honors active artists and institutions that have made a major contribution to the perpetuation of their art form.
