On Monday, October 27, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess will travel to Berlin, where they will be received at Bellevue Palace by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Mrs Elke Büdenbender.

  1. At first glance it looks like 1980s, somethings Princess Diana would have worn while she was still married.

    1. Look at fashion in the 40's of the last century, especially those sharp tailored suits for ladies ... it was very feminine and beautiful, for me, Mathilde's suit comes directly from that corner - enjoy: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/the-fabulous-forties-womens-suits-in-2025--190488259234597094/

    2. I never saw Princess Diana entirely in Dior. She had probably clothes from Dior but that must have been after her divorce from Prince Charles. The only thing I remember she had from Dior was the handbag the "Lady Dior" in black. The outfit Queen Mathilde is wearing is made like the New Look Dior created after WWII and was still worn during the 50s.

    3. I think she is referencing the hat. Silky to compare because other royals have worn this style had

    4. a polite way of saying outdated styles; dior or not

Thank you to show us that wonderful documentation. I still have pictures of my mother where she wore a pencil or a pleated skirt, a jacket + blouse + hat. The wider skirts are more from the 50s.
My mother told me that during the war women wore shorter skirts because there was not enough fabric which could be bought. And if they found a little shop in which they could find fabrics to make skirts of, the fabrics were very expensive. Young women, my mother was 18 years old in 1940, who were capable to sew clothes themselves took an old skirt used it on the reverse side and made it shorter and narrower .according the fashion of those days. With the help of a seamstress in her neighborhood, she made a jacket of an old coat.

Dior cannot be outdated. Queen Mathilde's skirt and jacket are made today by the house of Dior, according the style of "The New Look" which was created to mark the new aera after WWII. Princess Grace of Monaco wore that style too as a young princess. You can compare it with a piece of classic jewelry which is made of diamond and pearls it is never outdated either. You can also compare it with a famous painting.
All these things can never be outdated. You like them or you don't like them but they never can be outdated because they are unique pieces of art.
P.S. There have been other designers like Dior whose work is also considered as pieces of art like Jacques Fath, Lanvin, Yves Saint-Laurent and many others.

  2. What a pretty picture of the Grand Duchess and the Queen! I don't care for GD Stephanie dress - it's a little too matronly for me. It looks pretty with the scarf and the color is gorgeous but I do not like the neck line. I think if the bodice was more fitted the neckline would like better? It seems a little out of proportion somehow. Really minor tho because overall she looks happy and very nice.

  3. Beautiful and well-dressed ladies! Seemed to be a windy day.

  4. Wow, both ladies look lovely. Mathilde looks wonderful in her statuesque style, but the effort is more visible on Stephanie who is rocking these formal looks. I love her style of hat, and her collar and cuffs, and the dress length is very acceptable. Mathilde's red outfit is beautiful. Is it by Dior? Looks like it could be.

    1. Queen Mathilde's outfit is by Dior, the hat, the shoes, the handbag, everything. She wore this on 14 October 2024 for the state visit from Belgium to France.

    2. I totally agree. Both ladies look wonderful. The colour of the outfit for GD Stephanie is lovely and the neckline of the dress is perfect. I like both hats too. My one criticism would be that the very full skirts are not necessarily the most flattering but it’s a small complaint. Lovely.

  7. Stephanie looks beautiful. Pale blue is a lovely color for her and suits her delicate features and blue eyes. Beautiful pearl earrings which I don’t remember seeing before. Very glad that both ladies had longer skirts on a windy day.

  8. The ladies look very nice. My only quibble is the fit of the bodice on Stephanie, the curve of the darts are not contoured to her shape. Love the neckline and colour of the dress. The queen looks very. Ice in her suit.

  9. Absolutely fantastic group photos. Both men are very dapper and both women are superbly dressed. Their hats are gorgeous and also complementary one to the other. A stunning outfit on Stephanie. I love with and without the scarf. Removing it reveals a beautiful and quite unusual neckline.

  10. Wow, it has been a longtime ago that Stephanie looked só elegant!
Such a pity the dress is not made well : see the upper part where the breast seam is far too high. Apart from that, it is a lovely colour and great shoes.
Queen Mathilde: stylish as ever ( in a Dior suit?).

  11. The pale blue is not a good color for Stefanie, it washes her out. The dress makes her look 20 years older. She is a very beautiful woman and I hope she will get past this very conservative style.

  12. I think GD Stephanie suits the open neck design. I also like the longer length. It might have needed a little taking in to give the dress a structured look. But overall this is one of the nicer of her choices.
QM looks splendid in Dior. I believe she wore this during their State visit to France. She looks stunning.

  14. Last night it was stormy weather. Rain, wind all night long. This morning It was still very windy and not warm although we had a beautiful sunshine and when I was going out to do my shopping the t° was 7 degrees C.
GD Stéphanie will learn that during the second half of October, going out without a jacket or coat is asking for trouble. The royal ladies had also to keep their hands on their hats. It is the first time I saw GD Stephanie walking on stiletto's and on the cobble stones in front of the Royal Palace it is not easy when you are not used to. But Queen Mathilde will certainly give her some good advice how to manage all these new things.
Queen Mathilde looked very elegant in her Dior outfit. HGD Stéphanie's dress didn't fit very well. I think it was not made according her measurements. She will also have to find out with which type of hat she looks the best. On picture N° 7 one can see that her dress is too long. It reaches almost her ankle's. GD Stéphanie is too short to wear such a long dress.

    1. Interesting to read your weather and your thoughts! I actually think this is a very good hat for Stephanie, and yes hopes she also finds many other styles that work for her. I think the dress length is superb with those shoes, and more elegant because of the length. I’m sure the dress is well fitted for her shape, but with a bit of a tummy, I notice over the years, she prefers things loose over her waist. So I think this is what is incorporated in the choice of measurements. I think she’s done absolutely superbly with this outfit.

Queen Mathilde looks very elegant and stylish. The color is gorgeous, love the color of her shoes and clutch. She looks very smart and beautiful.

    1. Queen Mathilde is not wearing a clutch but the "Lady Dior" handbag in burgundy. Princess Diana had the same in black. Queen Mathilde has als a smaller version of the "Lady Dior" in white, but I've seen her daughter CP Elisabeth with it. She borrows often her mother's accessories and jewelry.

  18. I believe that the rather ill-fitting upper part of GD Stephanie's dress might stem from a recent bit of weight loss that seems to not have been considered worth alterations. Also, for a late October state visit, it is a surprisingly light dress (regarding material and colour), and might have needed a coat, a jacket, or a proper wrap (not just that flimsy shawl). Let's see what she will be wearing for the visit to Germany starting on Monday.

    1. It was not a state visit but a simple visit to a neighbouring country. It is the custom to do that when you become a new king or queen or in this case a new GD.

    2. Inaugural visit then. No need to be overly nitpicking on a term that describes such visits on a broader/larger, or more general, scale. I know, of course, what sort of visit this is.

  19. I really hope this shape of hat doesn't become a regular thing with Stephanie. I know many love it on her but I don't think it flattering or modern.

Paloma.

    1. By the way rather difficult to look both royal and contemporary.

      Delete
    2. Oh 11:38! These outfits are not so much contemporary as classics, which is what the occasion warranted. Modern also had its place but not on every occasion. I find them both absolutely delightful.

      Delete
    3. And what contemporary stylist are you to state that?

      Delete
  26. I like her best in a straight skirt, too, but this works.

  27. This Dior suit of Mathilde is amazingly beautiful. The special sleeves what you can see the best on the last photo gives this ensemble a very radiant appearance.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes they are contemporary at least Queen Mathilde's. It has been made for her last year by the House of Dior. I am not going to explain again why they are not old-fashioned. You can compare it with a piece of art. It is never outdated but you like it or you don't. What about cheap brands which copy over and over the Chanel jackets. Are they old fashioned too ? I don't think so because you can find them at all the up-to-date fashion stores like H&M, Zara, Mango, ....
