She looks good and confident, delivering a speech. I am not sure she needs the fringes (that never really look well-groomed), she has a nice full face and elongation by means of more forehead would be no problem. But well, maybe she abandons them one day (or lets them cut better).

    1. i think in Japan the fringe is trendy among the youth.

I agree that Aiko would do well to begin training the bangs/fringe away from her lovely face; if she really loves the idea of bangs then an effort should be made to keep them neater looking, which I think
is difficult when they are so very wispy.

  2. Elégante petite veste/boléro portée sur une robe ou une jupe toujours dans le même style à la cour impériale ; dans un modèle plus droit, elle serait superbe surtout après avoir rehaussé son look par les perles !

Very nice look for the princess, I like this style skirt on her rather than a straighter cut. Interesting design of the cuff, I like the piping on the edge. To make this signature look more modern would be a different shoe. These look very comfortable, a little on the bigger side, they just need a shorter vamp and less rounded toe.

The ladies in the back ground (pict. 4) have both a better hairstyle and a better dress style too. Are they allowed to be dressed better or maybe they do not belong to the Imperial court. If that is the case I feel sorry for Princess Aiko that she as a Princess cannot have a modern hairstyle nor wear clothes adapted to her age. You are not going to tell me that this is not frustating for her.

I think hairstyle wise she can choose, the trend seems to be long hair like many of the young and not so young royals. I like her fringe perhaps a little tweaking to modernize it a bit. The texture of her hair is a big factor too.

19:42 the cultural context for understanding is particularly important for Japan. We cant assume that what you would like her to be wearing is what she would want to wear. We can observe the differences rather than criticise, and celebrate that with all the globalisation there are still nations honouring their traditions and keeping the world interesting.

Anon941, it is not criticism but a critique on a fashion blog. It is wonderful to see traditional styles, it is just opinions of how something would be a more pleasing look to some than others. We are not influencers.

    5. I agree with Anonymous 09:41. It is important to take into consideration the cultural context when discussing fashion from other countries.

  5. Oh, I love this jacket, wonderful design and fit. The dress looks great, nice length and works in well with the jacket. Love her accessory color. The addition of the brooch, and beautiful single strand pearl necklace, seals the deal here perfection. She looks engaging and confident, great eye contact, public speaking can be very nerve racking, she looked to have nailed this. Well done to her.

I cannot believe it when I read your comment. She is obliged to wear everything what older women in Europe do not wear anymore. Older ladies do not even wear the pearls they inherited from their mother or grandmother. Wearing brooches even modern ones, is considered for old ladies. The younger generation of royals are wearing modern jewelry in gold and the stones are cut in a modern shape and worn in modern necklaces and bracelets. Pearl necklaces are usually not worn anymore. Sometimes we still see some pearls in modern earrings and surrounded by beautiful amethysts, citrines, kunzite, emeralds, etc...

Anon 1105 she is not in Europe and this signature look is meant to have pearls and brooches which you consider old fashion. The quality of these pearls alone make the outfit.

I agree with Anon 11:05. Aiko does not have a choice in what she wears. Her official wardrobe is dictated by the Imperial Household. They have set a standard wardrobe for the royals, which is why she dresses like her mother. I also agree with the comment about the jewelry. Currently, single strand pearls are brooches are considered "old lady" jewelry. She is a very young woman and must dress the same as the other royals four times her age. She may not care as much as some of us would because she was brought up this way.

Well said Ava, a very positive comment, and I love reading comments that are kind and explain how they see fashion. As for you Anonymous 11:05, it’s worth remembering that different countries around the world do different things! Even in our own countries we see different people choosing different styles, but we should absolutely expect them in other cultures, esp those who hold traditions well. Not up to us to say they are wrong for doing what is right for them!

I am not sure that our western style of clothing, shoes and hairdo is necessarily one that women in other cultures with different traditions would love to follow too. Our fashion and way of dressing is neither better nor more beautiful nor superior (think of high heels and pointed shoes, a pain in the a** and ruin our feet), just different.

Take a look at the ladies in the back on pict.N° 4. One of the ladies is wearing pointed shoes. The other one I cannot see her feet. Their hairstyle is up-to-date and also the shape of their clothes. Unfortunately the princess is wearing clothes that were fashion in Europe at the end of the 50s and during the 60s. Apart from their beautiful kimono's the Japanese royals do not have a dress style of their own. They just copy old European styles. Empress Masako sometimes is dressed beautifully. She has a very beautiful pant suit in a high quality fabric and the color is "taupe", I think. When she is photographed during her free time, she is also dressed much better. Princess Aiko is wearing her fringe like that since ages. She already had it when she was still a child. The younger generation of royals are not all wearing pointed shoes and stiletto's. But if they wear fashionable shoes with lower block heels or flats in fashionable colors they receive bad comments from some of the people on this blog. I wonder what Princess Aiko is wearing in her free time ? As we don't see much pictures of that, we can only guess.

She is wearing a signature look, which I will guess has strict guidelines. It is not meant to be the latest fashion. I think of it more as a uniform, and throughly enjoy seeing the exquisite fabrics and workmanship in the garments. It is the shoes that despite looking comfortable, that are my least favourite item, but they are no worse than the old lady sandals with a safety strap and large heels worn by other royals.
