Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, both ten years old, received their First Holy Communion during a ceremony at the Chapelle de la Visitation in Monaco-Ville. The event, a significant moment in the Catholic faith, took place in a celebratory atmosphere and was attended by close family members. Their father, Prince Albert of Monaco, also received his First Communion at the Chapelle de la Visitation, in 1965.

The Danish royal family are not catholic so their rituals may be different for their faith, which I think is Lutheran. Most Roman Catholic kids receive their FHC in Grade 2 (7 or 8yo), and their confirmation in Grade 8 (12 or 13yo).

I think you are confusing confirmation with communion

    4. The Danish Royal family is Lutheran. Totally different denomination from the Monaco RF. It’s so sweet how Gabriella is holding Prince Jacque’s hand. ;)

Katholics have their communion at primary school

They aren't Catholic. In the Catholic faith, age 8/US second grade is the typical age for First Holy Communion

    7. In Scotland it is even younger, around 8. In Anglican churches, it tends to be early teenage, Princess William was 15, for example and matched to confirmation. I think the Lutheran churches will be similar, Prince Christian was also 15

The Spanish too-, are Roman Catholics. Leonor and Sofia were around 16.

Many of you are confusing confirmation with 1st communion.
The Spanish princesses had their 1st communion when they were in primary school, I think. But it was a very private event. In Belgium the 1st communion and confirmation ceremonies of the childeren of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde took place in private. If I remember correctly their first communion took place in Ciergnon where they have a family castle. They were also baptized there.

Anon 01:26..Leonor and Sofía did their confirmation at 16, first communion 9 in Spain , It is not the same.

    11. @Anonymous11/5/25 22:16 is right confirmation and communion are different.
Communion, also known as the Eucharist, is a sacrament where Catholics receive the body and blood of Christ in the form of bread and wine. Confirmation, on the other hand, is a sacrament that strengthens and seals a person's faith, often seen as completing the initiation process that began with Baptism.

Both are celebrations in the Christian church, but there are main differences when and how it is done. The first holy communion is celebrated only in the Catholic Church, mostly around the age of 8-10 (it varies a bit between countries). The confirmation is only celebrated in the Protestant / Lutheran church, mostly around the age of 14-15. Both have the idea of welcoming a young person into the faith.

      @ Sissy
The confirmation is also done in the catholic church at the age of 12-13.
I did it, my son did it.
It has indeed started with Baptism just after birth. Then at the age of 7-8 years one have the first Holy Communion. At the age of 12-13 years old one have the Confirmation.

For truth's sake, saying that the Danish Royal Family is Lutheran is a rough definition.
There are different Lutheran Churches: of Denmark, of Sweden, of Norway , for example.
I much appreciate Lutheran Churches across Norway and in Kristiansand in particular for their essential and solid- seemingly severe too- architetture, especially in the interiors.
The things which I find most impressive are their use of candles, dark furniture in most cases, almost no statues, just paintings reminiscent of some Bible passages.

Lovely family photo for this important event in the lives of Jacques and Gabriella. The picture I love the most shows the incredibly close bond between the twins--where Jacques has extended his right hand and Gabriella is holding his thumb and little finger. So sweet!!!

How lovely. Blessings to them both on their journey of faith.
This is the time of First Holy Communion, which typically follows Easter for about 6 sundays. Our church has been having between 10 and 15 for every weekend mass so far, so already about 120.

The handhold between the kids is so cute. Anybody have insight into the Monaco Catholic Church with kids wearing what looks like priestly robes for first communion? (Not what you’d see where I come from).

    1. It's been done in the catholic churches where I live as well. Mainly to have all kids clothed the same, no differences whether someone has the money to buy very expensive gowns for the girls and suits for the boys or not. No jealousy, no envy, no bullying because of that. All dressed in the same frock.

I think these robes should remind of belonging to Jesus Christ and of the Christening. Helena

For the same reason as DSC has stated, our church has white robes that the children wear over top their other clothes. Some kids are very simply dressed, and some others are dressed like brides and grooms going to weddings or proms..so the white robes bring it all to the same level.

Beautiful Prince and Princess on this milestone in their life. I’m no Catholic but I wish them a peaceful, bountiful inner life. And that they show mercy and compassion with those who are different and less fortunate than them.

The royal twins are 10yrs old now I believe.
I appreciate the simplicity of the plain white robes. I’ve been to 1st Holy Communion where the young girls are dressed as young brides. It’s not a day for dressing up,it’s a day of reverence and simplicity.

Congratulations to the twins - The spiritual biography is a space where people can experience what moves and connects them. Belonging grows through shared actions. This space is held by the attitude that all thoughts and feelings are heard – like in a family where everyone matters.

My warmest congratulations on the twins' big day!
    They look adorable as always.
What a remarkable milestone this Is in their lives.
    Well done.
Their parents are perfectly attired for the occasion and they rightly look so proud!
These pics call to my mind a ten- year- old and shy girl often flushing who was dressed just in the same way on the day of her First Holy Communion back in the day.
    Thank you.
The girl has grown up but her young spirit and eyes of wonder are still there though all that quick flushing out of nothing must have got lost somewhere in the folds of life.

Au Québec les enfants catholiques recevaient leur première communion vers l'âge de 6-8 ans, pour cette célébration les filles étaient toutes habillées de blanc et nous portions un voile. La cofirmation était célébré plus tard vers l'âge de 13-14 ans.
