Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and Princess Aiko visited Daikakuji exhibition

On February 6, 2025, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, along with Princess Aiko, visited the Tokyo National Museum (Taito Ward) to view a special exhibition commemorating the 1150th anniversary of Daikakuji’s founding, titled 'Daikakuji: From Imperial Villa to Buddhist Temple.' In celebration of this milestone, the Tokyo National Museum is showcasing the temple’s treasured artifacts ahead of the official anniversary in 2026.

In the early part of the Heian period (794–1192), Emperor Saga established an imperial villa in Sagano named Saga’in, and on the recommendation of the Buddhist monk Kūkai, he also erected sculptures of the Five Great Wisdom Kings on its grounds. Years later in 876, Princess Seishi converted the villa into a Buddhist temple, founding Daikakuji Temple.

I’d have loved to see a black or grey pencil skirt with Princess Aiko’s jacket; the tobacco-colored full skirt does not pair well with it. But one of these days, that lovely young woman will hit it out of the park. — Jane

Or if she had just worn some pants like her mom.

This picture made me think ( out of the fashion context): her father studied in the UK, her mother in the USA, and the daughter? I donot know, but living for a period outside your own country can be a very good experience.

      天皇の娘は他の皇族とは警備の重要性が違うため、愛子様は留学を諦めたとの報道がありました。この情報が確かな物かどうかは分かりませんけれど。ちなみに、天皇陛下の妹君も留学はしていません。

@Anon 15:09 Thank you for this information - I had no idea that the Emperor had a younger sister, Sayako. Now I read that she lost her royal status after she married a commoner in 2005, so that is why we never hear of her as a royal. I think that is sad, but different cultures have different rules.

Mother is dressed in a younger style than the daughter.

I want to find something to like about what Aiko is wearing. The jacket alone is nice, but I do not like it belted. To give her a waist, let her wear clothes with a better cut. Unlike Kate's outfit earlier this week where her trousers had a brown pinstripe to coordinate with her blazer, I don't see any brown tones in Aiko's jacket. Her skirt is too voluminous for her, and the shoes are terrible for a young lady in her early twenties. As we have seen with other young princesses, it is a difficult age to dress. They are no longer girls, but too young to dress like "women" without looking too old due to the decorum expected of a princess.

Lovely to see the three of them attending together once more, and even more appreciation that, once again, their outfits are nicely colour coordinated. Masako is so elegant in these trouser suits. They are her signature style and she wears them so well. Her slim, tall, figure is perfect for such a garment. The ruffled neckline of the blouse underneath is the perfect non-jewellery accessory for a smooth look.
A shorter, more structured (shaped) skirt, or even a pair of well tailored trousers would have made a world of difference to P.Aiko's overall look.

Yes I agree perhaps a nice tailor ant with this jacket would be very nice.

I’d love to see Aiko’s jacket with slim, black, ankle length trousers and ballet flats. There’s too much volume in the skirt and worn with those shoes the look is dowdy to my eye. E. Masako’s pantsuits are her signature look and she looks great as usual. (V.M.)

  9. They seem to be a very close family, always nice to see them out and about. Aiko seems to be dressed a bit too "old" for my taste, she's in her twenties, maybe some lighter colours, maybe a less conservative cut of her clothes...?

Nice look on Aiko, but maybe a different skirt more matching. Her smile is super.

The Empress looks fabulous as usual--very chic and elegant in her beige suit. It fits her perfectly. Aiko needs her mother's tailor. Her outfit needs help. The jacket has such great possibilities but it needs to be tailored better to fit her better. The tobacco skirt is a no here--instead she needs a slim skirt. I feel sure the Imperial Fashion Police would not allow a pencil skirt but slim, narrow skirt in black would have been perfect. As this outfit is it is so frumpy for young woman. A pair of trousers cut like her mother's in the same fabric as the blazer would have been perfect. I so wish there was something that could be done to upgrade Aiko's wardrobe along the lines of Kako's wardrobe.

Based on many outfits of Japanese royal ladies, I say: Japanese tailors probably cannot sew a nice women's skirt.

The pumps of Japanese royal ladies are also unfashionable. I am sure that pumps with a thin heel can also be chic, but they have not yet been invented in Japan.
Princess Aiko's hairstyle is worn by girls up to about 14 years old, older girls and young ladies would deserve something more sophisticated.
