King and Queen of Sweden attended the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' festive meeting

On April 12, 2024, Swedish King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia attended the Academy of Sciences' festive meeting at Stockholm City Hall. During the meeting, some of the biggest scientific prizes of the year were presented to their recipients. The independent organization Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA) was established in 1739 for the purpose of supporting science and strengthening its influence in society.

The Academy normally celebrates its feast day on March 31, the anniversary of the establishment of the Academy's basic rules in 1741. But since this coincided with Easter this year, this year's feast day took place instead on April 12.

@Anon 18:09 Please wake up and realise that this board is made up of contributors from around the world, and each country has their own slightly different way of spelling the same name. As long as we know who is being referred to, there's no harm done. Your arrogance would be better placed towards other concerning matters instead of petty spelling - unless you have nothing better to occupy yourself with. Thanks.

I am afraid I agree with 18:09. In this case the difference is little. But a couple of days ago the comments talked about Princess Beatrice of the Netherlands, her name is Beatrix. Some on this blog translated the name of King Willem Alexander into King William (Alexander was simply omitted). Former Queen Margrethe of Denmark has been called systematically Queen Margaret or even Marguerite, etc.... The name is perhaps the same but the way you say it is completely different, etc...
One of the first grammar rules I learned when I studied a foreign language at school was that "proper names cannot be translated" in any language. My eyes and my ears tell me there is no arrogance in Anon. 18:09 comment. She/he just said her name is Silvia.

There is a difference in spelling ones name slightly differently ('Silvia' spelled with an 'i' or a 'y', and changing someones name to something different ('Willem' to 'William', and 'Margarethe' to 'Margaret' or even 'Daisy' as I have seen). That is not the case here so make your point in the right forum when that happens. Here it is merely a slight variation in spelling (like 'Matthew' or 'Mathew'). The word still sounds the same and we all know who the person being referred to is. Pointing out such a trivial spelling variation on a global blog where the participants speak many, many languages is arrogance, whether intentional or thoughtless.
(Point of interest: There are at least 10 different ways of saying and spelling the name 'John'. Not all of them even sound the same - but they all mean the same name, just in a different language or spelling dialect)

@18:09 & 9:13 - I agree. It annoys me when people can't get these famous names correct. Would we like our own names misspelled - of course not! When I read the Spanish press, King Charles becomes "Carlos", Princess Madeleine becomes "Magdalena", but names they can't translate remain the same (ie Victoria). His name is not Carlos & her name is not Magdalena. English press doesn't refer to King Felipe as "Philip", so why do the Spanish do this is what I wonder. |Melanie|

      @ several Anonymous.
There is a John who is living In my neighborhood. Nobody translates his name in Dutch. Nobody calls him Jan because his parents gave him the name of John & not Jan. His parents are Dutch (Flemish) speaking so if tomorrow he might move to France everybody will continue to call him John and not Jean because his legal name on his ID card is John and not Jean or Jan or Juan, etc... It is arrogance and not very polite to pronounce someone's name not correctly. For the law the name on your passport is the legal name which correspond with your birth certificate. It might be difficult for some people who are not familiar with foreign languages to pronounce a name correctly, but when you write a comment I think one must do at least an effort to write a proper name correctly.

      1. I said in this case (Queen Silvia) the difference is little.
      2. You were giving the example of former queen "Margrethe", but you spelled her name as "Margarethe". Even in a forum on writing the name of a Queen or King correctly you make mistakes.
      3. Normally when a new item is added on this blog there is an introduction to explain the subject. I never saw the name of a Queen or King or Prince or Princess misspelled. Is it so difficult then to copy the name of a royal correctly ?

@Anonymous 14/4 16:13 When I wrote "Margarethe" I wasn't necessarily referring to the former Queen regnant of Denmark. I was referring to the actual name "Margarethe" (which legitimately exists in other languages,) to make my point - which it is obvious that you don't understand or are missing. No problem.

You must not pretend that it is me who doesn't understand it. We were talking about Queen Margrethe from the beginning. The point is that people are not reading the intro. It is not only names they cannot copy correctly, they sometimes do not even understand the subject that has been treated. But you may think what you want, I know that I am always writing the name of the royals correctly and I do not use abbreviations like Max or Bea. I do not know these royals personally, why would I call Catherine Kate for example ? Once it has been asked to call her Catherine I've started to do so, although the British press continued to call her Kate. I always use their title too which cannot be said from everyone. To me it is Queen Maxima, Duchess Sophie, CP Victoria etc... Good evening.

This is a very nice dress or dress-jacket combo for this occasion. This colour suits the Queen well. Many others would be completely washed out. I love her fur trimmed cape. They both look very elegant.

Queen Silvia cannot be washed out because she is trying to keep the color of her hair almost always the same. If she had colored her hair blond like so many royal women do when they are becoming grey and afterwards let the grey hair shine through the blond, then she would have been washed out. The color of her skirt and jacket is more like taupe, which is better than grey.

And how is that different from other royals past and present that the monarch steps out and ahead, the rest follow behind? Not sure what you expect, they are not on a personal date

Queen Silvia's skirt is so beautiful and the brocade of the jacket match the silk of the skirt so well. A pity that light blue sash must be worn. It ruins the beauty of the whole outfit.
