The Belgian Royal Court released new photos on National Day 2023

King Philippe his two eldest children, Crown Princess Elisabeth and Prince Gabriel

The Belgian Royal Court released two new photos of King Philippe with his two eldest children, Crown Princess Elisabeth and Prince Gabriel, on the occasion of the National Day. The photos were taken before the military parade traditionally held on the National Day. Belgium's National Day is a national holiday celebrated annually on 21 July. It is one of the country's ten public holidays and marks the anniversary of the investiture of Leopold I as the first King of the Belgians in 1831.

Excellent look for Princess Elisabeth...so much more flattering than the trouser suit

Very impressive. As I saw it, I thought it would be nice if royal women would wear uniforms more often (if available for them).

A very benevolent and dignified family that is organized, sorted and approachable to everyone. In addition, they are handsome and very tastefully dressed - with or without a uniform.

      Kay, I agree with you.
This skirt uniform, I don't recall ever seen another one, is very elegant and dignifying, do other countries have it as well?

      Kay, I agree with you.

@Luna Sweden also have skirts for dress uniforms for women. At gala occasions you will see female aids to CP Victoria wear long skirts with dress uniform.

@Luna: Queen Elizabeth, Princess Anne wore uniforms with skirts too. See e.g.: https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-13520007645f3de202f6c486fbbd70d6-lq

@Luna. I only know that women in Belgium have not always been allowed to the Royal Military Academy. Can't tell exactly since when they are. Probably the skirt made his entrance then.

Great photos. Princess Elisabeth and Prince Gabriel look so smart and their Dad rightly looks so proud of them. I especially like Princess Elisabeth’s uniform which looks so much smarter than trousers (compared to Princess Anne’s outfit at the Coronation for example)

  7. Wonderful majestic photos! Thankfully the Palace didn't withheld these photos. We didn't get Princess Elisabeth's formal portrait in gala dress/tiara in honour of her father's reign, so these do make up for it.

When i saw the 2nd photo of Prince Gabriel posing side by side with Princess Elisabeth, I couldn't help but thinking...he will be a great pillar of support to his sister in the years to come as they assuming more royal duties. He is somewhat to me, very reliable.

Was there a formal portrait in gala dress/tiara in honour of her father's reign ? I don't think so since one could follow the whole RF during the 21 July from the "Te Deum" in St. Michael's catthedral in the morning, the Military parade in the afternoon, the party in the Parc in the late afternoon and the concert and fire works in the late evening. With 3 changes of clothes (4 for Elisabeth). Taking into account that she probably just was back from Summer camp with the students of her year at the Royal Military Academy. When would she had the time to pose for a photo shoot in gala dress and tiara ?. Besides there is a picture of her and her father when they went together to the wedding of the Jordanian crown prince. CP Elisabeth wore one of the most beautiful gala dresses (+ tiara) seen during the evening. Rose

    2. Rose, what I meant was the Royal Palace only released the official photos of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde to commemorate the 10th year reign ( you can refer this blogpost back on July 12th, we've got 10 wonderful photos from them). But many royal watchers felt that it was such a missed opportunity that CP Elisabeth was not involved in it.

I was hoping her formal portrait to be like when Princess Ingrid Alexandra's 18th birthday portraits. Posing in front of formal photographer and so on. I think the Royal Palace should have planned it by now since she's coming of age.

I know there was no photoshoot scheduled on that National Day, even the 10 official portraits of the King and Queen took place on September last year. And the pictures of her during the Jordanian royal wedding...yes, I do agree with you, Rose. She looked amazing, but it was taken during her walkabouts and greeting the Jordanian royals.

@Sherry. When crown princess Elisabeth became 18 years old there were also formal pictures of her and with her parents and grandparents, etc... and there was a big party with her family and friends, her former teachers, there was choreography and there were singing and musical acts by young performers. There was probably a dinner or a reception where only her family and a selected group of people where invited. She was not dressed in a long gown and she had no tiara at that time. Afterwards when she assisted at the gala dinner for Princess Ingrid Alexandra's 18th birthday she showed up with a tiara nobody ever saw. Now we now that it is was a present from her parents for her 18th birthday. So the 2 birthday parties where quite different.
Secondly one take a formal photo for an important anniversary, wedding or something that happens in a person's life. Since the 10 years or reign of her father is something important in her parents life and not directly in her own I don't see why she should have a new formal picture for that.
I am sure we will see a new formal picture of CP Elisabeth in due time, until then you will have to wait. Rose

Wow. Thx for showing us these beautiful pictures of King Phillippe and his children in their military uniforms. The uniform of the Royal Military Academy is so beautiful. The king is wearing his uniform of the Belgian Air Force. It is funny the photographer had to place Prince Gabriel a step lower than the other two because of his length. One can see that the king is so proud of his children. Only few people know that CP Elisabeth prefers to go, for the 2nd year on summer camp with the students of the Royal Military Academy rather than taking a vacation. I hope she will take a vacation during the month of August. Rose

I think yuo' re way off the mark there.
CP.Elisabeth must have pants tucked into her boots beneath her coat uniform.
It can inferred warching the video where she is marching on the occasion of the military parade.
Men's and women's uniforms are different.
She is so beautiful and feminine both wearing her uniform or when greeting the military personnel.
Her brother looks quite simply amazing as well.
Anyway, if you want to see her wearing pants, you should look for videos showing her during military training.

    3. Of course they can wear pants, everybody knows it. But why should they always wear pants? This is a very beautiful combination with those boots.

What do you mean ? Women do wear pants in the Belgian Army. There is a difference between the gala uniform of an officer (men and women) and their combat gear.

    5. 2023 is about Gender Neutrality. so while in 1923 women wearing trousers was breaking the norm, in 2023 men wearing skirts is the new frontier.

      @ P. the original
CP Elisabeth is not wearing a coat uniform, but a jacket (like her brother) and a skirt. You can see it clearly on pictures 2 & 3. Did you see how well the uniform fits. If she had tucked in pants into her boots underneath the skirt, it would have shown. Beside why would she, it is summer. Rose

You are missing the point. This uniform is originally made with pants, so let her wear those pants and not this ridiculous skirt. A uniform always has pants, otherwise it’s just a masquerade.
And of course men can wear skirts, but in this case there was no skirt in the beginning.

I think YOU are missing the point. It is not wearer of the uniform who decides what and how to wear it but his/her commanding officer. With your comment that a skirt is a masquerade you make every female student of the RMA ridiculous. Do you realize that these young men and women are following every day hard training and have to study at the same time courses of higher education. Those who achieve this receive a diploma equal to university degree. In CP Elisabeth's case she is following also the courses at Oxford university. Such courage one does not find very often under the younger generation. So keep your ridiculous comments to yourself.

A bit of respect please for the uniforms of a king and his children. To those who find these uniforms ridiculous I say they have no respect for Belgium. At least Princess Elisabeth and Prince Gabriel have real military training and at the same time an academic education. One cannot say that from every crown princess in Europe.
