Queen Margrethe II became the longest-reigning monarch in Danish history

Margrethe succeeded her father upon his death on 14 January 1972. She became the first female monarch of Denmark after Queen Margrethe I, who was the ruler of the Scandinavian kingdoms from 1376 to 1412 during the Kalmar Union. Queen Margrethe II is thus the longest reigning monarch in Danish history from the middle of July. On this occasion, the Danish Royal Court released new photos of Queen Margrethe.

The Danish monarchy has existed for more than 1000 years and is among the oldest royal houses in the world. Christian IV was King of Denmark. His reign was the longest of Danish monarchs and Scandinavian monarchies. Christian IV became king in 1596 at the age of 19. He ruled until his death in February 1648 for approximately 51 years and six months.
