I find this style and color so much better for QM, on the other hand I like PM's dress, but not the color, it washes her out.

I agree, the style looks perfect on Mary but the color is a fail. MR

H.M. The Queen wears a new cure dress, which the Craftsmen's Association in Copenhagen presented Her Majesty on the occasion of the government's jubilee last year.
The Queen always wears a so-called cure dress at the New Year's cures in January. The new dress replaces the former royal blue court dress, which Her Majesty received more than 25 years ago. The material is Satin Cuir and the colour bordeaux.

Why doesn't brought this Aussie girl the sun back in her clothes?
The grey matches with the cold grey floor tiling, it doesn't warm me up, instead it washes her out.
Nevertheless Mary is beautifully well-groomed and I like the pattern in her dress. Fred handsome as ever.
QM wears almost the same dress Q Catherine of Russia ones wore.
I can imagine her spending time sitting on the window bench, studying historical/theatrical fashion books, looking out on the heroic past.

Aussie girl? Perhaps you intended to be funny, but actually you sound disrespectful. Is rather impolite to call a woman “ girl” under any circumstances, but then to add Aussie is just unfortunate.

No, there is nothing disrespectful about 'Aussie girl'. It does not denote age or anything. Aussie girl is a standard phrase for any woman born or living in Australia. I'm an Aussie girl, and there is nothing wrong with the phrase. If she were called 'an Australian girl', things would be different, but the phrase is Aussie girl. I'm an Aussie girl, but an Australian woman. - G'day! Ellie

    5. But let’s be thankful that @-Anna- didn’t refer to Princess Mary as an “Aussie chick” or an “Aussie sheila”.

Having reread the above comment by @Anna, it doesn't sound like her usual style of comment. Is somebody using her nickname?

Never abnegate you're inner child. Why not playing with words? (boring)
I knew Mary was on holiday in Down Under haha but I never meant Aussie in a bad way. It is like I'm from the Low Lands, des Pays Bas haha, just a special name.
And for a woman from above 50 myself it's a compliment to hear you calling girl or miss ( mostly from people older than myself ). But yes I take that anytime!

Love the Queens wintery outfit in the rich burgundy colour with fur trimming. Very suitable for a New Years reception in a cold palace.
I have never quite liked the look of CP Mary´s changed outfit. I think it is the key hole that bothers me. It makes it feel as if the top and the bottom are for different seasons.

Wow!!! I love HM's choice today!!! I don't know that I have ever seen her wear anything other than her blue gown to this event. But, this beautiful deep red is perfect for her. CP Mary is repeating a redesigned silver/gray gown that I have always liked--she looks wonderful.

Margrethe had the blue court dress for over 25 years. This event has a strict dress code which limits the dress choices for royal ladies, and the orders they wear attached to their dresses are so heavy that there's extra fabric sewn to the bodice to make sure the dress does not tear. I once saw some of Margrethe's dresses in an exhibition where they also showed the bodice sewing, and you could see how the brooches had stretched the fabric. Mary has a couple of dresses she re-wears for this event and I think her choices are perfect - simple yet elegant and respecting the nature of the event as well as the guests. She knows this event is not about displaying latest fashion.//Grace

    2. QM's dress is GORGEOUS!! Love the faux? fur trim at the neck and the color is so pretty! I like P.M.'s dress too, but the Queen's dress is the prettiest I've seen on her in a long time!

Really love this outfit for QM…beautiful color and much prefer the structured fit. It’s one of the most modern outfits she has worn and I’m a big fan.

  9. The Queen looks sensational in this color, beautiful outfit. CP Mary looks beautiful, I love the gown from the waist down. The top is a bit bland, but the skirt has swing and movement, looks very elegant. I don't mind the grey color.

I love the way Queen Margrethe holds on to tradition.
She is totally aware of being ( one of?) the oldest monarchies in Europe and keeps its values.
Fashionwise: lovely combination in beautiful colour, and Mary in modest grey.
QP Frederick has to go back to his military training to learn how to stand upright in his beautiful uniform.

Love the colour and style of the Queen’s outfit. Would her Order of the Elephant sash not look better over the jacket? CP Mary looks far less tired this time but while the grey/silver dress is elegant, some colour would be an improvement, imo AnnieM

I must admit that I am a bit disappointed about CP Mary s outfit. at the new years reception she usually looks absolutely amazing. This time I think she has a more discrete look - she looks very elegant as usually , but the wow factor is missing

    1. It's always the case for the second New Year's event that the colours are very subdued, nothing too flashy, nothing too loud, perhaps with the exception of the queen. Her blue dress of former years was quite modest, too. Now, the new burgundy one seems a bit more striking, though.

    2. Agree, the colouring of Princess Mary’s gown is subdued.
BUT,maybe she’s chosen to do this so that she doesn’t outshine the Queen.
The flow of Princess Mary's skirt is beautiful.
Queen Margrethe is certainly the belle of the ball with her bordeaux coloured evening gown.
I always love to see Prince Frederik after they’ve given him a good wash and polish and put him into a uniform.
I’ve got him in my cut out and paste scrapbook of handsome princes, you know.

p.s. it’s certainly the season for the Royals to deck themselves out with all their hardware, nuts and bolts, that’s spent most of the year in a closet.

  16. I love the Queen's dress, wonderful colour, very dignified, elegant, and timeless pattern. Mary's outfit is much more conventional, she used to have much better dresses for this occasion.

I think that CP Mary’s discreet yet sophisticated gown is an INTENTIONAL choice.
The focus is thereby on the fabulous court dress of the queen. Perhaps in view of the conflict regarding titles at the court, our eyes definately tell us who is in charge. The queen likes giving messages via colour and I am certain all this was discussed beforehand.

  18. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to see Queen Margrethe wearing something other than her blue ensemble.
Crown Princess Mary is looking very tanned from the Australian sun which in my opinion isn't doing her choice of gown any favours, this gown normally looks stunning but not so much on this occasion, this could be because I much preferred this gown before it was altered.

It's isn't her who chooses what decorations and how many to wear. These are decorations as you say, not jewellery. She is obligated to wear them all because of the nature of the event - a reception for some of the highest qualified people in Denmark's government and judicial system, and members of the foreign Diplomatic Corps. Particularly with regard to the latter, Heads of State historically dress to impress foreign diplomatic representatives who live in their country, and have been doing so through the centuries. Many countries continue this tradition, not just Denmark.

@Anna, do you think calling a grown woman girl is cute? Would you call the prince boy?
In any English speaking country it’s disrespectful. Now, if you are with with your sisters or friends and you refer to one as “ my girl” is a total different issue.
