The prize handed out every two to three years was established by The Birgit Nilsson Foundation after the death of the late court singer Birgit Nilsson, who was a celebrated Swedish dramatic soprano, and was awarded for the first time in 2009. Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo was announced as the first recipient of the prize. The prize money of one million dollars makes it the world's biggest prize in classical music.

  1. Quelle magnifique silhouette chez la reine ; ces messieurs sont très élégants !

  2. I have never criticized Silvia's outfits before, but omg this dress is so awful. Can't decide if I think nightgown, curtains or tent. And on top of that a red necklace..

    1. I think there is something wrong with you screen or pc or smart phone. To me the necklace has the same purple color as the dress, which I find lovely. Just pity Queen Silvia looks so very pale. Maybe it is only on my screen. By the way I like her dress. It reminds me of those ball gowns one can still see in a Hollywood movie from the 40tees.

    2. I tend to have the same opinion, not flattering for her.

    3. My guess is that the "red" necklace consists of amethysts, which are most often lilac or purple but never really red. Of course it is different colour than Silvia's dress. It also seems that in the middle is another necklace, most probably of small white pearls with a few amethysts in between. There also seems to be something dark red below Silvia's sleeve on the right - a handbag perhaps? So we have 3 different colours here, dress, necklace and handbag. Depending the colour of the light the dress and the amethysts could be nearly same colour when seen "live".

    4. Agree with Anon 14:24, too much unstructured fabric, also neckline is too low which is why it is filled in with multiple bead necklaces, and which raises the question about decolletage and what "foundation garments" QS is wearing - or not wearing. Time for QS to donate this one. S.M.

    5. Looks red to me, and she has a red purse also so I guess thats the reason for choosing this necklace. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ce324e717665f000183a170/1666200491712-1CWZ2XN026K19T7YLO89/queen_silvia01.jpg?format=1500w

  3. Mi piace, sembra una vestale. Non aveva bisogno di una collana così importante perchè l'abito lo è già di suo.

    1. My thoughts exactly. Fabulous colour, probably great fabric but totally different from her usual evening gowns. AnnieM

  7. What a royal and lofty outfit. The color and style are perfect for her. I love that!

  8. I find this dress way too big for the petite queen. She is drowning in all this fabric. Not a good look for Queen Silvia.

  9. The dress is wearing her. Too many necklaces, it looks too busy.

  10. This dress is so far out of Queen Silvia's wheelhouse its in another neighborhood. But, I like she is stretching herself. I do like this dress--the color is gorgeous on her. I do see where perhaps there is too much fabric but I would like to see her in motion in the gown before I would say the fabric is overwhelming her. I'm on the fence with the necklace(s)--not sure about it but understand she was also going after a completely different look with her jewelry too.

  11. I'm in the minority, i really like her in this dress, different, elegant, lovely color, if only I would not have the purse, for the rest a winner for me

  12. Surprising dress for Queen Sylvia who mostly sticks to her good, elegant, classic and a bit predictable style.
Love it that she dares something totally different, and like the dress too.
Seems to me she combined it indeed with a burgundy bag and burgundy necklace, which lifts the effect.

  13. I think Queen Silvia looks very glamorous. Her dress is royal purple and her necklace (on my screen) is near the same color, accompanied by another necklace lighter in color. I bet her dress flows behind her when she walks. King Carl Gustaf and Yoyo Ma look very handsome. Yoyo Ma is so very talented.

  14. Silvia has a lot going on, but I am sure she thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Yo-Yo Ma is amazing.

  15. I must laugh when we have seen younger royal ladies in dresses like this the judgment has always been nightgown comments. Now it's suddenly ok. This is so bad I don't have word for it.

  16. It's a no from me. I like the cut of the dress as it's something different and the colour is good for Silvia. BUT the neckline in combination with the statement necklace makes it look like a boho jersey top from the early 2000s. I think I'm missing the "regal" factor here.

  17. The color of her gown is glorious, but the style of the dress I am not so fond of, alo't of fabric, large sleeves, regardless the Queen looks very elegant.
