King Charles III addressed nation as monarch for the first time

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton now be known as the Prince and Princess of Wales

Prince Charles became king the moment the Queen died, under the old common-law rule 'Rex nunquam moritur', which means 'The king never dies'. New sovereign Charles addressed the Nation and the Commonwealth for the first time as sovereign following the death of Queen Elizabeth. King Charles paid tribute to the Queen and pledged his duty to his service.

King Charles addresses the nation - WATCH

King Charles pre-recorded the speech, which was just under 1,000 words and lasted around nine-and-a-half minutes in the Blue Drawing Room of the royal residence in London.

King Charles said: "I speak to you today with feelings of profound sorrow. Throughout her life, The Queen - my beloved Mother - was an inspiration and example to me and to all my family. Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived; a promise with destiny kept and she is mourned most deeply in her passing. That promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today."

"In her life of service, we saw that abiding love of tradition, together with that fearless embrace of progress, which make us great as Nations. And wherever you may live in the United Kingdom, or in the Realms and territories across the world, and whatever may be your background or beliefs, I shall endeavour to serve you with loyalty, respect and love, as I have throughout my life."

"This is also a time of change for my family. I count on the loving help of my darling wife, Camilla. In recognition of her own loyal public service since our marriage 17 years ago, she becomes my Queen Consort."

"As my Heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me. He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the Duchy of Cornwall which I have undertaken for more than five decades. Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty."

"With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given."

"I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas. In a little over a week's time, we will come together as a nation, as a Commonwealth and indeed a global community, to lay my beloved mother to rest."

The King signed off his speech with a tribute to his late mother and father, saying: "To my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you. Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May 'flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest'."

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge have changed their social media handles to reflect the new titles given by King Charles III. The couple will now be known as the Prince and Princess of Wales.

  1. No fashion comments of course but an intensely moving speech. The conclusion is another tear jerker.

Un discorso emozionante e pieno di amore, ma con senso del dovere e con decisioni importanti.
Credo che re Carlo ci stupirà.

    Beautiful and heartfelt speach.
He's been prepared for being the king and he had very good and strong role model. I'm sure he will be very good king, with Camilla and others BRF members supporting him.

  8. I watched the speech too, and it was very well done. I feel most respect for Charles. He couldn't have payed a better tribute. His final lines moved me to tears.

If it's not too much to ask... I have been trying to find out why the speech was pre-recorded. Does anyone know why that is? Is it protocol or has it a special reason?
    Many thanks in advance!

    1. I think one reason it was pre recorded was so that it could be shown as part of the service of Remembrance in St Paul's which started at 6pm, same time as the speech was televised.

@Rosalyn: It would be my guess that it was the best way to accomplish this important duty to his people, given the time constraints and the vast number of formalities to be accomplished in the 48 hours following the queens death, including those involving his own ascension to the throne. It would also allow for the best presentation of this important speech. I imagine that the Queens death in Scotland also added to the logistics.
(I doubt that it was recorded more than a couple of hours prior to air time as he seems to be wearing the same pocket square as when he arrived at Buckingham Palace.)
Again, I don't know any of this for sure, but this seems logical to me.

If this IS a democracy, then Prince Andrew must not be shielded by his position and must face a CRIMINAL trial for the allegation(s) of child rape

It is a betrayal of victims of sexual crimes not to demand this.

Go on then - demand it. Produce some evidence that is more than he said, she said so there is an actual chance of it going to trial.

Il processo non può andare avanti perché la vittima ha accettato il risarcimento economico. Il reato si estingue, ma non la colpa. Spero che il re metta definitivamente in un angolo Andrea.

  10. The King's speech moved me to tears, and I am not British (at least by birth). May Queen Elizabeth II the Great rest in peace, and may the reign of King Charles III be as inspiring as that of his mother.
