Queen Margrethe celebrates her 50th year on the Danish throne

Queen Margrethe and Crown Prince Frederik

This week marks 50 years since Queen Margrethe became Queen of Denmark. Due to the coronavirus situation, many of the major public events of Queen Margarethe’s Golden Jubilee have been postponed and will instead take place on September 10 and 11. Those events include celebrations at Copenhagen City Hall, festive service in Copenhagen Cathedral and gala dinner at Christiansborg Castle.

Queen Margrethe and Crown Prince Frederik

On January 14, the Queen and the Crown Prince met with the Prime Minister at Christiansborg Castle. Afterwards, the Queen, Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim, Princess Marie and Princess Benedikte attended the Danish Parliament’s official celebration of the anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne.

Thereafter, they participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Frederik the 9th and Queen Ingrid’s grave at Roskilde Cathedral. Former Queen Anne-Marie of Greece was unable to take part in her sister Queen Margrethe of Denmark’s jubilee events because her husband, former King Constantine of Greece, has been hospitalized due to COVID-19.

  1. Congratulations to Queen Margrethe. She and all of the ladies look wonderful. I especially like Princess Benedikte's royal purple ensemble, the cape in particular. The Queen looks great, of course, and I see that in addition to her daisy jewels, she is wearing the ruby horseshoe brooch given to her by her father. Princess Mary looks very nice but the pearls worn over the collar of her blouse is somewhat awkward, in my opinion, and the bodice of her dress seems a bit too snug. I love her cape. Princess Marie looks fabulous. I love her mint green coat which looks very good over the black and white dress.

    1. Debra, I agree with all your comments. Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte look absolutely marvelous. I love all the hats. Agree about Mary, and the shirt under isn't my favorite, but she looks fantastic with the cape.

    2. @Debra. Agree with your comments except that I think Princess Mary's pearls fit in well with her ensemble.
But what a pity Queen Anne-Marie had to opt out due to the medical condition of her husband, King Constantin.
I have just read that he has left hospital (13 Jan.) but his health remails worrisome.

Mary: The skirt longer than the cape is a miss.

QM's teeth are as yellow as princess Ann's. I wonder if both ladies are still smoking. If not, there are good treatments at the dentist's to make teeth white again. There are also good sorts of toothpaste that make teeth whiter. Do these royal ladies don't know this ?

I think Margrethe does not care. She has always been like this. She is passionate about her job, interests and art. I don't think she cares about how she looks in the way other royal women do. Personally I think it is a little beneath her to be obsessed with looking perfect and having things done.

Common housewifes with children and an interesting job do care about their health. It has nothing to do with being obsessed but with the fact that we must be caring, if it is not for ourselves than do it for your partner or children, grandchildren and family. Taking care of ourselves has nothing to do with looking perfect but with having respect for ourselves and others. An old man or lady who is well taken care of is so lovely (cfr. Princess Benedikte or Queen Elisabeth)

Margrethe may have yellow teeth but they don't have to be weak teeth. I think her teeth look strong actually. She has also been a smoker all her life, so I don't think she cares so much about being very healthy nor how smoking affects her surroundings. She is from another generation where smoking was something a lot of people just did.

Is whitening your teeth about health? You can have good teeth even if they are yellow. And maybe Margrethe's teeth can't be white because of lifelong smoking and genes. Other royals have had veneers but that she obviously doesn't want.

  4. What a special day for HM, her family, and her nation! All the ladies look great. I love that HM is wearing her Daisy brooch--the connection to her mother and Prince Henrik. Her pale blue ensemble is lovely on her and she is wearing a jaunty feather in her hat. Princess Benedikte is princess perfect in her beautiful purple and her cape is so pretty. CP Mary is elegant in her tans and cream--love that pillbox hat, a mix from the Danish Ruby parure, the pearls and cape is fabulous. Its so nice to see Princess Marie--her coat is a very pretty pale green.

  5. This is a fashion blog so I feel free to complain about that extremely ugly old fashioned miniskirt the table is wearing. UGH! I presume it is to protect its beautiful surface but I expect to see something far better from Danish design that at least did not fight with that particular shade of green carpet.

Maybe they just forgot to put its petticoat on first.

    1. @Elizabeth. Yes, come to mention it, the table cover could be better.
It's been tailor made and not something off the hook.
Looks like it's on loan from Buckingham Palace.
Something with a bit of "Danish design" would be much better.

People often seem to forget that in most monarchies tradition is considered important. "The ugly miniskirt" is - most obviously - a museum piece specially made for the table when the palace interior was made. As such it was a natural choice for a historic meeting instead of modern design.

I think Mary’s outfit is fabulous, but the pearls seem to be an overkill and I truly dislike the hat, of course that is a personal preference and needless to say she exudes elegance.
Princess Benedikte’s cape is classic, but the color elevates it to unique, again not crazy about the hat, but on this instance I think she makes it look good.
Marie’s coat is a little more casual, I think it clashes a little with the more formal hat, which I like very much, the color is delicious!

I'm wondering if the pearls aren't Margrethe's - I've seen her wearing similar ones I think for her last jubilee in the evening, and maybe she's passed them to Mary. In that case it'd be a nice gesture to have worn them.

Queen Margrethe looks wonderful. Beautiful coat, dress and hat. Light grey is a good colour for her. Crown princess Mary : it is not bad but we are used to better outfits of her. Too much beige. The design of the hat is not good for her. She seems to wear a top under her dress, probably to protect her for the cold. It does not work very well, I think. The cape is nice. Princess Marie : I love her coat. The hat is not so good, I'm afraid. She should have worn natural coloured stockings instead of black. We cannot see her dress very well. Looks nothing special. Princess Benedikte : wow, what an elegant lady and still a good posture for her age. Love the purple tones of her cape, hat and dress. Here the black stockings are a good choice.

  8. I have noticed that Cp Mary often wears subdued colours, when the Queen is at the centre of attention. The Queen shall be the star of the show. Mary looks extremely elegant to me in her beige outfit, very appropiate for the occasion. Just don’t understand that she is not wearing stockings in january - she must be freezing! But then she never does. Not so keen about Maries dress or hat or hair, but the colour of her coat is lovely. When I watched television this morning, I could not really see the details in Princess Benediktes outfit and did not think it was any special, but when I see the photographs, her dress and coat are quite outstanding. The Queen actually looks as usual. She often wears that pale blue colour and she has worn this outfit before. Her favourite tailor, Annette Freifeldt made it. Looking forward to the celebrations in september!

      Nina,
      Come on,...
      CP Mary
is allways dressed looking for, camera, attention and focus ... today as well wearing those BIG pearls at daytime.

I understand what you mean about subdued colors in contrast to the Queen. However, I think that so much beige stood out and therefore caught a lot of attention on this day. But that's just my opinion.

    3. @LL That's your opinion. I disagree.
Princess Mary is doing her job and if that comes across to you as "looking for attention" well, it's your right to say so.

      Quite funny indeed.
You said CP Mary was looking for cameras...well, if you have a close look, you'll see Prince Joachim and Princess Marie doing exactly the same.
Then, what protocol forbids to wear big pearls in the morning?
It much depends on the occasion and Margrethe's glorious milestone is surely one of them.
Princess Benedikte is wearing pearls too.

  9. Mary and Benedikte both are so elegant!

Mary's dress is too narrow on the upper part and I find the choice of dress with the shirt odd since looking at the model it doesn't look like a winter dress. I remember that Mary has worn a beige skirt and shirt combination before during winter so maybe that would have been a better choice for this occasion? Also the hat is a size too big.

  11. It's a win for Benedikte for me. Both the cape and dress are in beautiful colours and such elegant shapes. I really don't like any aspect of Mary's outfit. The colour, the hat and the cape do not inspire at all. The green Max Mara is lovely but I am not sure how I feel about Marie's hat nor the dress. Finally the queen looks lovely in her blue outfit and the hat is set off by the jaunty feather.

  12. Clear winner for me is Princess Benedikte who is perfect from head to toe. If Princess Mary's outfit wasn't in that beurgh beige colour, it would also be a winner. I think she looks great with the pillbox hat, I can overlook the coat shorter than dress but it's so unexciting. Queen Margrethe looks lovely both in her coat and the blue grey suit. Disappointed with Princess Marie--I like the hat and what can be seen of the dress underneath but the coat is too informal. Great to see the whole family together on this auspicious day.

Benedikte is the winner here. Queen looks nice. Mary looks elegant & love her cape &, hat. I like her dress however the top underneath doesn't do it for me. I understand it's cold in Denmark now but perhaps the weather calls for a dress more suitable to colder conditions. I think three quarter sleeves are more appropriate for in-between weather conditions. Marie'coat is gorgeous although a natural skin tone stocking would have been nicer. In saying that perhaps the black stocking she wore were suited to her dress underneath. Overall the Danish royal women are elegant &, pulled this even off beautifully. Maru

  14. Princess Benedikte looks immaculately groomed. Her cape is gorgeous, but her dress is fabulous, stunning colour, gloves and hat, she really is a class act. CP Mary looks divine, the only thing I would change is the strand of pearls, a bit too much. Her outfit is stunning. The Queen looks marvellous, her coat is lovely, the two piece suit, perfect choice.

  15. And many more to the beautiful Danish Queen.

  16. It strikes me that Mary may have chosen her outfit carefully as a nod to the clothes her mother in law may have fashionably worn 50 years ago for this 50th anniversary! … If you imagine 50 years ago, this outfit is spot on! Sometimes I see commenters on this blog jump to conclusions on fashion choices without thinking, what other messages might these royals be being asked to give today? … and maybe this is one such case? I think she looks fabulous.

Could be a nod to older times yes, but did you see how the dress looked with the white shirt underneath, when they were sitting inside? It was not a good look. The dress was clearly not meant for that.

  17. Firstly in my mind, there are no winners; what a silly way to comment fashion.
The always super elegant Benedikte looks sublime in plum and fuchsia. Mary also elegant as ever cleverly chose a beige ensemble not to overshadow her MIL. The dove blue outfit of Margrethe looks wonderful on her, even the fur, but in reality these colors was her out a bit. Marie I must admit a meh as usual, sorry not to be nasty, but as lovely as she is, she really has no real feeling for style, compare the ex-wife and her SIL. Frederik has also a perpetual style of wearing suits that don’t fit, looking forever juvenile, including his signature messy hairstyle. He brings an aura of not being ready to take over and a shyness, unfortunately. Joachim’s life style has caught up with him and he on the hand looks much older than his years. Missing the kids in this celebration, but probably following protocol, although well behaved, they are to young to attend.

I do not agree with you about Princess Marie. She has a lot of style. You must not compare her to Crown Princess Mary who has a different style, very beautiful in general but not this time. I also think that the budget of Princess Marie is smaller than CP Mary's. The fact that Prince Joachim looks older than his years has probably to do with his health condition. What he has been going through could be the reason. He is looking good again on the last pictures I saw of him.

  18. In my opinion that shade of blue would have to be one of the most flattering colours on Queen Margrethe.

Crown Princess Mary looks very elegant and I love the pearls. Such beautiful pearls should be worn more often.

I am not a fan of long hair and hats so Princess Marie wearing her hair down with a hat is a big NO for me. I don't like the coat either.

The Queen is re-wearing a lovely outfit, along with Princess Benedikte in the gorgeous ensemble, and Marie and Mary, both looking lovely. I was not quite sure of Mary's outfit, something seemed out of place, the sleeves, or the large pearls in the daytime, or the length skirt versus the cape. Overall, they are all lovely (though I wish Mary would stop filling her cheeks with filler, or botox in the forehead, she is beautiful, don't mess with mother nature) :) jj

Queen, her sister and Mary looks good but Marie's outfit is confusing. The coat is very nice but does not look good with the dress. And thick tights with this slender shoes does not look right. And the hat would be better with chignon. -Siri
