On January 7, 2022, Princess Kako of Japan attended the memorial service for commemorating the 33rd anniversary of the death of Emperor Hirohito (posthumuously known as Emperor Showa) took place at Musashi Imperial Graveyard in Hachioji City. Imperor Showa (29 April 1901 – 7 January 1989), was the 124th emperor of Japan, ruling from 1926 until his death in 1989.

ردحذفEastern styles are very different than western style standards. There are also a lot different priorities than clothing. She is extremely well put together in her appearance according to thenJapanese culture. A lot of westerners can't see through the lens of their own culture.

In fact, that coat looks like those worn by well-to-do european and american widows before World War II, although those ladies coats would have been only ankle-length.
حذفI think she looks stunning in this very traditional outfit. The coat is so beautifully tailored, and the brooch is a perfect accessory, not large but interesting in its design. I think the hat is lovely too, an excellent shape for her. (V.M.)

In a way, yes they do. They are all formally attired for State related occasions by the Imperial Household Agency who determines the manner and style of dress for each occasion set by decades of precedent, and in some cases, centuries of tradition. This ensures uniformity through the changing generations of the imperial family.
حذفThe individual members do not have much say when it comes to these formal dress decisions (they might be offered a small choice of colours, fabrics or accessories styles to choose, but very limited). In their private business they can dress however they please, but we're rarely shown that. Same applies to the men.
Whatever they wear will be exquisitely tailored. The IHA spares no expense for the best and finest handwork as we have often seen.

ردحذفKako's severe formal dress and accessories are such a contrast to the casual New York street style that her sister Mako is now wearing. I could understand it more if they wore kimonos for these occasions. At least it would be their traditional dress. ~d

حذفIk ben volledig akkoord met je wat de traditionele kleding betreft, die bovendien veel mooier is dan deze zwarte stijve kleding. Het lijkt bijna de kleding vooral met de hoed van een priester bij ons voordat de "clergy man" stijl opgekomen is.

I respect traditions and royal culture in other countries, especially Japan.
However what I find difficult to accept is that in today's day and age, a cultivated, royal family would throw their daughter out in the street due to the fact that she married a commoner.
I'm sure Mako's family must be suffering especially her younger sister but tradition is tradition so it appears to be in Japan.
I wish Mrs Komuro and her husband, strength and happiness in 2022 and for the years thereafter.
@deadeggs In the pictures I have seen of Mako since her move to New York, her hair has been down each time. She has worn jeans which I haven't seen her in before. She has even gone shopping alone. Imagine the freedom! I agree with you about the family aspect. I cannot understand the "tradition" of living a royal life controlled by a small group of men that dictate such decisions about their personal lives. It is very intrusive. The sisters must miss each other terribly. I'm sure the transition has been difficult for all of them. They knew what their lives would be like when they had children, but I think the reality is much more than one can imagine when actually living it. ~d
