Lady Louise Windsor celebrates her 18th birthday today

The eldest child of the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Lady Louise Windsor. Her Royal Highness Princess Louise

The eldest child of the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Lady Louise Windsor, celebrates her 18th birthday today. Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor was born on November 8, 2003 and is 13th in line of succession to the British throne. She is Queen Elizabeth's youngest granddaughter and currently studies History, Politics and Drama.

Lady Louise have mostly grown-up out of the public eye, usually only attending formal events such as Trooping the Colour and royal weddings. Because she turned 18 on November 8, Lady Louise could now decide to take on a number of patronages and ambassador roles, as her older cousins, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

When the Earl and Countess of Wessex (Prince Edward and Sophie) got married in 1999, Buckingham Palace announced that their children will be free to decide to receive the title of prince or princess. The Earl and Countess of Wessex left the decision to Lady Louise on whether she will receive the title of princess when she turns 18. If Lady Louise decides so, she will receive the title of Her Royal Highness Princess Louise.

She looks lovely, and yes I would love to see her accept her title of princess. I think she will be a great asset to the monarchy like her mother.

    1. I hope she chooses the HRH route as well. It's her birthright.

I think it would be wonderful if Lady Louise decided to accept the title HRH. Princess Louise. I imagine she would be a tremendous asset to all members of the Royal Family. No doubt she could undertake a few official outings under the guidance and with the support of either her dad, Prince Edward and/or her mom, Countess of Wessex, Sophie, until Louise feels a bit more comfortable with the public and the media attention. She could do begin by doing some attendances in between her study - University if she has decided upon that pathway or in whatever job/career pathway that she is thinking of. Doing it part time would ease the anxiety of such a big transition. Part of why I think she would be an asset, is based on several factors - she seems to be a gentle young teenager/now adult, with a great awareness of family and the importance of protecting her grandparents so I think she would conduct herself with awareness of the Queens values and with integrity that has been instilled in her from her parents. Knowing how close she has always been to Prince Philip and that she shares a special connection with Queen Elizabeth II speaks volumes about her character. At this stage in her life she has chosen to not be a part of social media accounts (Facebook InstaGram etc) as a matter of self preservation. A wise decision, as it has allowed her to not read negative comments. When the time comes for William + Catherine to ascend the throne, (hopefully bypassing Charles + Camilla), it would be helpful for them to have Louise working with them, taking on some of the load. By the time George, Charlotte + Louis are old enough for official duties, for them to have watched Louise undertake some sort of role might help ease their anxiety especially as they all adore, admire, idolise and love her. Given that when William + Catherine are King and Queen (Consort), the likes of Charles, Camilla + Anne will no doubt be pretty old by then if they’re still around, so having Louise already used to attending things, chairing foundations, having an ambassadorial role, etc, would help William, Catherine, Edward + Sophie as they’d be the four main ones working full time, given Harry and his wife have moved on.

    4. PollyAnna, I totally agree with everything you wrote, except William and Catherine bypassing Charles and Camilla (even if I still don't forgive them as for Diana)

  5. Happy birthday to Lady Louise. She seems like a lovely unassuming young lady, very much in the same mould as her mother. Her contributions to the various programmes on the death of Prince Philip seem to bear this out.

Is she not 16th in line to the throne? Being that far down the line of succession, I suspect she'll not want to take the title Princess, though it would be nice to have a fifth "Princess of the blood royal" With the absence of Prince Andrew and Prince Harry from royal life, and the age profile of the Gloucester and Kent royals, hopefully we will see her play a prominent part in public life in the years to come.

  10. Afraid this will sound trite, but she's grown up so fast. :-) She tends to dress a bit "old", but then her face hasn't a contemporary "look" either - to me, she looks very much like a young Edwardian lady. I wish her all the best and I'm looking forward to finding out what she's going to be doing with her life.

Agree, she has the look of a charming, young Edwardian lady.
Makes me think of Jane Austin.
A very happy birthday and may she enjoy many more.

    2. @deadeggs, that's true! She could be an Elinor or a Jane. :-)

    3. Well, the world and times of Jane Austen actually were one hundred years prior to the Edwardian Age (early 1900's) - the Georgian Age, to be precise, also at times called "The Regency" because King George III was unable to reign later in his life due to a chronic illness. Therefore his son, the Prince Regent (also known as "Prinny") was mainly in charge of the kingdom. About 210 years ago now. No mixing up of historic eras, please.

    4. @DSC opps, sorry. I need to call in at our local library and get some reading material to help fill me in on British history :-))

    5. I didn't think that deadeggs mixed up the eras; I thought that Louise just reminded her of a different kind of woman from a different era.

BTW, do you know thedreamstress.com? She has a lot of historical fashion and shows lovely regency clothing; just the thing for a history nut or Austen fan. :-)

  12. Happy Birthday to the lovely Lady Louise! She has become a very polished and graceful young woman--kudos to Sophie and Edward. As for deciding to adopt the HRH and Princess title...I don't see her doing that. She has been raised to understand she will not be a working royal and to know she will pursue a career outside of the royal worklife. I think she will stay Lady Louise unless, perhaps her grandmother and/or Uncle Charles advise her differently.

I understand that Sophie and Edward have brought up Louise and James with the mindset that they won’t be allowed to just live off being a Royal, that instead they will need to be contributing adults to society - which is likely to include going to University and getting a job. However, Sophie has always added that when she and Edward finally explained to their children exactly who and what their grandmother does, + how she has slowly over the years explained the importance of honouring their position in life, which means respecting the privileges that come their way and this means contributing to society in various ways, when needed. I think given that Louise and James have had the opportunity of a relatively normal life, much like Princess Anne’s children, Zara and Peter, did and subsequently Zara’s kids + Peters kids are living unencumbered by protocols, it might mean that if Louise chooses her Title and chooses to participate as a working Royal (part time) to some degree, she will cope and excel at it. Given her parents are still very happily in love + married, and that they haven’t been involved in tumultuous scandals, thus achieving a balanced upbringing for their kids, so I suspect this would be advantageous to Louise, much more so than if she had been brought up in the spotlight like the Wales boys and York girls. Not sure if that makes sense. The divorces of the Wales + the York’s has had a profound impact on W + H and on E + B, with each one approaching their internal emotional scars differently to one another. Louise doesn’t come with that emotional baggage.

She's wearing the same pin/broach in two of the photos. Does anyone know what it is or who gave it to her?

    2. It's a brooch that shows a so called bit (that part of of a horse's tack that goes into the mouth of the horse) or parts of the leverage attached to a horse's bit. She's a horsewoman, after all.
