On January 26, as ambassador and spokesperson of Chanel, Charlotte Casiraghi took part in the first traditional literary meeting at Rue Cambon in Paris. Dedicated to the figure of author and psychoanalyst Lou Andreas-Salomé and held in the new CHANEL Haute Couture Salons at 31 rue Cambon in Paris, this first Rendez-vous littéraire rue Cambon (Literary Rendezvous at Rue Cambon) took place in the presence of Charlotte Casiraghi, Sarah Chiche and Fanny Arama and became the first of a series of events around the theme of emancipation.

Hosted by Virginie Viard, artistic director of fashion collections, and Charlotte Casiraghi, ambassador and spokesperson for the fashion house, the project aims to bring together female authors, actresses, and friends of the Chanel fashion house at a series of literary meetings. These literary gatherings perpetuate the literary tradition of the Chanel fashion house initiated by Gabrielle Chanel and continued by Karl Lagerfeld, rediscovering women writers from the past and giving a voice to women authors of today.

  1. Charlotte is beautiful, elegant and well-educated. A good role model for young people in her promotion of the literary arts. On another note, I detected that she has a smoker's voice. I could hear it. I know that, unfortunately, she is a smoker like her mother and Aunt Stephanie. I hope, as a mother of two and for her own sake, that she will make all efforts to end this addiction.

    1. Beverly, I agree with you, although I know that it is not easy to give up smoking. I managed to do so about 20 years ago, but I am aware of the fact that I'll be back in that addiction once I smoke only one cigarette. So I don't do it. I have not touched one cigarette since I stopped and I swear I still find that hard, especially when my collegues smoke .

Good for you Coralic. You have my utmost admiration. Nicotine addiction is very hard. I never smoked, nor anyone in my family, but my mom's very best friend did. She died while still in her early fifties. My mom lived to 86. I have often wondered if my mom's best friend had only stopped smoking while she was still young - like Charlotte's age now - how much more time we all would have had with her. She was like an aunt to me.

    3. Europa, I am so sorry for your loss! I agree with you, it is very likely that this nice lady would have had more years without smoking...
I remember my doctor's words when I told her that I was ten years without cigarettes - she said: "Congratulations, you have the lung of a non-smoker again!" And yes, it is an addiction - had I known before, how hard it is to stop, I never would had started.

  2. This is the first time I've ever heard her speak. Her voice is lovely! Much deeper than I imagined.

  3. I don't know if and how much Charlotte smokes but her voice did not change since she did her first interview when she was around her twenties. And who are we to judge? She is very elegant in this Chanel outfit. I am not a Chanel fan but this one is beautiful and suits Charlotte.

I agree ..... she looks lovely here, very French, elegant and classy, bon chic bon genre. Her voice is pleasant, especially remarkable since many young women nowadays have horrible voices, using uptalking and vocal fry.
Is she smokes ....... her life, her choices.

It's a lovely voice, deep and sonorous, and I guess that even without smoking, her voive would be a bit deeper. The pitch of a woman's voice may also be partly affected by cultural factors.

All in all, she appears to be a well-read, intelligent and interesting person.

  5. Là, Chanel convient très bien à Charlotte même si je préfère le modèle noir que je trouve beaucoup plus élégant par rapport au tailleur veste/jupe - Très joli maquillage !

I think Chanel is a much better fit for her than the other fashion houses she has worked. That familiar relationship seems to help her seem more at ease with clothes. She looks great.

She has always had a deep voice - it has not changed unlike her mother's which is definitely a smoker's voice. As far as I am aware Charlotte has quit smoking - there were pictures of her last year with an electronic cigarette.

I think she is the perfect ambassador for the Chanel brand. Firstly the hair pulled back in a chignon is perfect for a literary gathering and the black dress looks nice for the meeting as well. I think it is kind of sad that things go south and off track to comment that she has a cigarette sounding voice. Unfortunately more attention will be about smoking cigarettes than what the meeting was intended to be.

I think they are just comments on how sad/surprising it is that such a young, well educated, and obviously intelligent woman made the decision to smoke when there are so many negatives to smoking and no positives.

    3. Anonymous 9:16, you think only old, poorly educated stupid women make the decision to smoke? You are funny!

@Coralie It sounds like I hit a nerve. I think you put your own interpretation on my words to make yourself feel better about your own decisions. And an addiction is never funny. This was a reply about the comments regarding Charlotte's smoking. Nothing more -- that is, until you made it more.

It is fact that people of lower socioeconomic status smoke more. They are targeted by tobacco companies, they do not have the same access to tobacco education or smoking cessation programs, they usually have more medical complications from smoking due to inadequate medical care, etc. None of this is new information. Children in the US are taught these things in school. Children know that smoking can cause lung cancer and heart disease and COPD. They have been shown a healthy lung and a blackened lung from a smoker. They are taught about second hand smoke.

I know there are more smokers in Europe. My surprise, and I think others', is that she models and her face is worth money. Smoking is going to age her. It shows on her mother, and even more so on her Aunt Stephanie. She is a mother, and to many, it sets a bad example. Growing up in the US, especially in California where smoking has been banned from public spaces for so long, it is difficult to see. It is more a way of life for many of us, so much so, that even smelling smoke is difficult when are you are never around it. Charlotte is young and worldly. Her generation has been better educated than Caroline's was. She certainly knows the risks associated with smoking and made the decision to do it anyway. Sad and surprising? Yes. A comment against anyone else who smokes? No.

@ 10:25 I am aware of that. Before I wrote my comment, I had already read Coralie's very honest account about giving up smoking and how easy it would be to be to become a smoker again. I have nothing but respect for her and anyone that is able to stop. I know it can be a life long struggle. I did need to clear up the misconception she had about my comment, however. I know a few smokers and even have a few family members who are still smokers that are unable to quit. I do not insult them or anyone else. I only wish they didn't smoke because I don't want them to die prematurely due to smoking.
