The Duchess of Sussex released a video message about the impact of George Floyd's death in the U.S. for students graduating from her former high school, Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles. In the video, The Duchess said the events had been "devastating". The Duchess also reminded living through race riots in 1992 and spoke of her regret that nothing appeared to have changed.

In her video message, the Duchess called on young people and students at the school to come together to rebuild society. The Duchess also said that she was "nervous" about addressing graduates and speaking about the events of the previous weeks.

  1. She's right and she said it eloquently. Lovely way of framing these graduates as potential agents of change. It gives hope to an otherwise bleak situation.

And yet she left Jill. No one turns away from fairness and understanding. She was trashed by outsiders for breaking "rules' to an imaginary club of royalty to which these same outsiders have no firsthand knowledge of it's inner workings. The tabloids stories with blaring headlines were enough. It's over. Let her address the girls from her old high school in peace. Ana

Jill, I am almost speechless. Your statement is incorrect. So very incorrect.

Meghan's commencement address to the graduationing class of Immaculate Heart is referencing decades old racial problems and the fact that the current racial issues are demonstrating that we, as a society, have not made the strides we should have. She is essentially passing the baton to these fledging adults, the new hope, to repair the racial disparities that exist. In thirty year's time, there should have been progress made. For that, she apologizes. We should have done better, and they now inherit the problems the current and previous generations have failed to adequately address.

    4. I agree with Anon 10:40. The video has nothing to do with her period in Britain. She speaks here about racism in the US at the light of the recent events, a subject she knows quite well. She does it in a convincing and soft way.

@10:22 The title of dutchess has never existed. It is better to remain silent etc. etc. than to type nonsense riddled with misspellings and remove all doubt.

@ unknown, you are incorrect, she is a "duchess" , and nobody is " just" anything.
Your comment is ugly, you don't have to open the video if you aren't interested on whatever she has to say. For those that are interpreting this message with anything related to England , you are looking for anything to trash her, just like the British press. She is addressing her high school and speaking about the pain and struggle that many people of color face around the world, and that is too deep of a subject to address on this forum.
    Regards and peace out :-)

I appreciate her effort. She does a great job of speaking her truth. It must be hard for her, knowing that no matter what she says, it will be picked apart by many people. At the same time, I feel compelled to say that it's actually perfectly fine to say nothing. A person can simply BE with this situation. We can allow our tears to flow, we can be with the confusion, the shame, sadness, grief, anger, outrage. We can do our best to quietly and privately confront our own inner division. It is not necessary to speak out or protest. It's fine to do so, but not mandatory or necessary. We will each have our own path through this.

  10. Jill,

From the start I read the toxic, continuing coverage from the Daily Mail (which other tabloids also engaged in). Wild exaggerations, fabrications, distortions. I used to wonder -- why this continuing campaign and what does the DM have against her. Why were the crazy sister and low-life brother given so much print to denigrate her? (Meghan broke ties with them years before she met Harry.)
The DM would stir up its readers to post hateful comments. I wondered how Meghan (or anyone) could emotionally handle these assaults day after day. Well, she couldn't. So they left.
This is a fashion blog -- Meghan looks lovely -- hair pulled back, simple, classic outfit. Her clothes do not distract from her words.

I have already posted on this topic. I wanted to add this for everyone's consideration. I am quoting from an article that appeared in The Express, UK on 6/5/20. Apparently it is a reprint from May 21, 2020. The Title of the story is, "Meghan Markle's Wedding Dress Designer Says Exactly How Royal Family Behaved On Big Day."
Here is excerpt from designer, Clare Weight Keller. "The ride in the car to the church was an incredible trip through a sea of waving hands, flags and people from every walk of life. I remember the roar of the crowds, huge,so thunderously joyful you couldn't help but smile and feel quite how surreal it was to be faced with this vision."
The designer went on to describe the royal family as "charming" and everyone behaved as any other family on a happy day.

    2. For Anonymous 9:46 a.m.
This quote from the designer was used in at least two other publications: The Daily Mail and Newsweek. In the Newsweek story of 5/21/20, they had a different headline: "Meghan Markle's Wedding Day Dress Designer Reveals Inside Story of 'Extraordinary Day' with Royals."
The quote I posted here, Newsweek also ran it. However, they added other remarks from the designer such as:" We traveled for a few minutes behind Meghan's car, going through that wonderful energy and uplifting spirit......"
The article also quotes the designer saying the royals were 'mingling" like any other family talking about their kids, the bride and groom, etc etc."
It appears the designer was giving quite a few interviews apparently to mark the wedding anniversary. So I wouldn't be surprised the quote shows up in other other publications, but I don't have the time to research it.

    3. For Anonymous 9:46. Some additional information on the quote in question: You might care to check out You Tube, "Meghan Markle's Bridal Designer Clare Wright Keller Shares Her Memories of the Nuptials." The narrator is referencing the designer's Instagram account where apparently she posted her thoughts on the wedding day. The narrator then gives the quote about the crowds. This quote appears around 1:49 on the film.

@ anon 8:13... looks to me that you haven't heard many commencement addresses or any other kind. Polite speakers generally use this phrase, thanking organizers, listeners or anyone for that matter, before the speech.
What I find puzzling is that you only take that from the whole speech...
WOW! you could use a better argument to find fault, and regardless of our likes or dislikes, Meghan is an educated woman and no stranger to public speaking ( unlike many others) .
Thanks in advance for your response ;-)

To the anyn poster above. Obviously you didn't spend time to listen to the speech and condescendingly went on and on about when speakers thank people. That sentence was the last sentence of that speech. And btw, most speakers thank people at beginning of a speech. It's an odd sentence in the sense that she wishes them and challenges and then , btw, thanks in advance.
So to the person above, may be you should actually spend time listen to that speech before commenting what is what and be all preachy.

Outfit ok but people who live in a gilded bubble can always tell a lot. I find it partly ridiculous to explain life to "normal" people. You can do without that. After this "nice speech", for which the world has not waited, she heads back again to her million-dollar rental property, guarded by security and far away from reality. Sorry, but as a responsible citizen I don't need such a presumptuous lecture from Meghan Markle herself nor anyone else on normal topics of daily life. That doesn't impress me at all! Frieda

      Dear "Responsible Citizen",

She stopped being Meghan Markle the day she married Prince Harry. She is Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex (with or without the HRH).

What does your comment mean? Who are these "normal" people you are referring to? Are you saying that racism is just part of the "normal topics of daily life", something to be accepted? You will be happy to know that the world was not waiting for this "speech". Her address was not meant for you or any of us. It was directed to a graduating class of high school students, as stated above. Even so, the message should have resonated with all, but I can see how it would be difficult for the small minded to comprehend. I think you are the presumptuous person in the bubble. I don't think there are too many, if any, people of color that have not experienced some form of discrimination. Until we all try to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem, history is going to continue to repeat itself.

Frieda, Read first before commenting! This was not a lecture. It was an inspirational speech as happens whenever someone is asked to address a graduating class. She attended that school, and was asked to say a few words to the girls.
Since leaving high school, she has graduated from an excellent university, worked in different countries (Argentina, Canada), learned other languages and has earned the right to live a better life with or without the royals. She is a citizen just like the other 375 million Americans and can give her opinion and vote, on what is happening in her own country. She also has a frame of reference, having grown up in LA at the time of the King race riots, and seeing racism up close. There is a video of her advocating against racism 8 years before she met Harry.
Take your knee off her neck! She lived a normal life until 2 years ago. Stop the hypocrisy. -June 5-

What does that even mean? that her words are for abnormal people?
So, because you don't like her, or approve of her choices, she can't talk ?
And yes, maybe you'll find this surprising, but many people of color have careers, and have been able to enjoy a high financial status, does that mean that they can't speak about the struggle of their lives?
Agree with anon above ,please take your knee off her neck!!

@ anon 6:56, you are correct I misread your comment, but not your intent you are just picking her words apart in order to diminish her as a person. Not preaching here , just tired of all the judgement from people that are just waiting for any appearance to start the attacks .
