Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako celebrate their 27th wedding anniversary today. On the occasion of the anniversary, The Imperial Household Agency released a new official portrait of Empress Masako. The portrait was taken on May 1, 2019.
Naruhito first met Masako Owada at a tea party held for Infanta Elena of Spain in November 1986 during her studies at the University of Tokyo. Despite the Imperial family's disapproval of Masako Owada, Naruhito remained interested in Masako who worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Naruhito and Owada Masako announce their engagement at a press conference on January 19, 1993. The wedding took place on June 9, 1993 at the Imperial Shinto Hall in Tokyo. Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have one daughter, Princess Aiko, who was born on December 1, 2001 at the Imperial Household Agency Hospital.

ReplyDeleteWhat a pity their state visit to England had to be cancelled this year.
It would have been a busy time for the "newmyroyals" site with all the elegant gowns and attire which would have been put on parade.
Hopefully it will be re-programmed in the near future.
