You cannot see it at the pictures. But the Queen was not at all appropriately dressed. A long skirt with high slits that fluttered in the wind when she crossed the large empty Dam square. Friends of me said "she looked like a witch, ready to fly away on her broomstick". Sorry to put it so harsh. The King had a very beautiful and emphatic speech.

It might not be to your taste, but it’s hardly inappropriate.
So it had high slits that fluttered a bit in the wind - without them she wouldn’t have been able to walk properly and it’s not like she’s showing any leg!

    2. That's what I thought as well. Only the broomstick was missing!

    3. I'm fine with the outfit, but I know, what you mean.
At the pic together with Mark Rutte *omg, he's so handsome* we can see the problems with Maximas Dress while moving. All together it's not her best dress, but also not that worse in my eyes.

  5. Não é uma saia com fendas - é um "chiripá" - versão feminina da pilcha do gaúcho - típica da terra dela, a Argentina!

ok, that makes some sense now. i thought it looked like from the movies. perhaps the huge bag was unnecessary.

Yes, she is from Argentina; however, this solemn occasion is to remember the Dutch, and she has been a Dutch princess/queen since 2002. Kind of like the photo of Willem-Alexander and his four ladies in their Spanish flamenco costumes that they ended up using for their 2019 Christmas card - it was inappropriate. ~Laurel~

  6. Really like Queen Maxima but this outfit while appropriately sober does her no favours at all. I still think that the beard is ageing for the King but he looks better in these pics. Good that they were able to mark this anniversary

For me - it's not flattering.
I think Maxim's cowboy hats (most of them) are not elegant enough. The lady with the chain looks good.

As far as I'm concerned, Maxima looks appropriately sombre and solemn in dark colours; She is properly covered up without going the route of another coat and military look that so many others seem to favour. Instead she looks smart and contemporary with in subdued Maxima style. She is not dressed to impress, as she shouldn't be for such an occasion.
The empty square makes the service and the moment even more poignant to me.

    2. I agree that her outfit combination is smart and contemporary (Maxima style). But the skirt is too long. She needs to cut about 40cms off the length of the skirt. It is out of place for an openair daytime event. More appropriate for a Royal dinner or evening gala indoors.

I would say Maxima's outfit created too much drama for the occasion. Everyone's eyes immediately shifted to her. I think a simple daytime business outfit would have generated less flair and reflected a more somber feel for the occasion. I do not like a beard on the King. It has aged him so much. I feel the same about King Felip of Spain. They both look years older than they are.

    1. I agree on "too much drama" ! on almost everything, except that I like the beard on the King. It looks as if Maxima has switched to extreme styling options, for quite some time.

She is always about the drama. Hence, her ridiculously, large hats. She certainly wants to always be noticed in a big way. Here again, instead of something classic and dignified for the occasion, it is big, bold, and yes, hideous.

Anon 2:57 AM, yes, and king Felipe has not been shaving his beard, for the past +/- 10 years, and he looks like an old man. So wish, that he can for once, shave it again!

Valentina. I completely disagree with the notion that disliking her fashion has anything to do with being envious of her, are you joking? I am not impressed by the fact that she is wearing a gaucho style skirt which on any other occasion and not so horribly combined I would find it original and daring, and I commend her for being true to her roots, but if Queen Letizia showed up at at a remembrance act wearing a typical Spanish flamenco dress, I would be equally horrified. Personally I find the entire ensamble ridiculous and theatrical, not to mention distracting for such an event. Just to clarify I don't dislike her or have any opinions about her character, I just find this particular choice very unfortunate.
      Regards.

This is the one-time-a-year occasion that you have to be modest, your majesty!
    Why is that so difficult?
Imo no feeling how to dress for an occasion.

The woman with the chain is the mayor of Amsterdam, a mayor so politically compromised she does not sing the national anthem, even not during this commemoration…

  23. I live in the Netherlands. We are still in a time where hairdressers, barbers and non esentials job holders like doctors, police. firemen etc. are asked to stay at home and no one can get their hair professionaly cut or dyed or seem to have had that happen. Therefore King Williams hair is much longer, wild and somewhat disordered lately and I love it. It suits him. He seems to have slimmed down too while locked up at home and he looks really good in his well cut suit.
Prime minister Ruttes hair is beginning to go a bit wild and thick and he suddenly has grey temples but I am not sure I like the longer hair on him.
Maxima had it seems put her hair up herself and it has disobeyed her but in general her hair does look better these days. Usually at this type of function it is plastered into place and does not budge but not yesterday perhaps the hairdresser forgot to leave her with a can of laquer.
I too can not say I really like the effect of her skirt on such an occaison but I can't see how she would have traversed that plain without the slits. It is bad enough trying to cross it in high heels it is actually very uneven stones or cobbles.
What I also think was if her hat had been a bit less casual and also less cow boy like the skirt would not have looked "a bit too much"but rather quite elegant

I find this outfit, more like a costume, rehearsed to look solemn but turning more like distraction. I find it unflattering in an almost theatrical way. There is so much you can do with black, a well tailored coat, pearls and a shall scale hat, and voila!!

  26. Maxima is a drama queen. Always wants the spotlight on her. I agree with the comments about her being in costume for a Halloween party. From head to toes there's nothing elegant about her total outfit.

Yes Ninius, that's the way it seems, she loves to be the focus of attention, and in the early days nobody stopped her. Her outfit is too dramatic for such a sombre occasion. Not elegant at all, it's too busy. ~Laurel~

This type of skirt looks odd with a hat. Do you normally wear a hat with a long skirt especially with one that seems to be more appropriate for evening wear. While I am on the skirt the fabric looks so heavy that it looks uncomfortable!
