      What are ear pins?

The jewellery is a set - I think she looks fine, very regal.

    Well done Mary!
She really made a wonderfull transition from “commoner“ into a stylish, interested and committed crownprincess.

Superbe la princesse Mary avec la guirlande feuilles de lierre en diamants sertie de petits rubis qui sert de diadème qu'elle porte souvent ; les boucles d'oreilles et le collier ont été judicieusement choisis !

  5. I think the photo is more of an official Royal portrait which could have come from a stock pile of photos of the princess.
I don't think Princess Mary would have gone to all the trouble to dress up like that for a 10th anniversary. Or I could be wrong.
Anyway, whether the photo is related to the occasion or not, she looks stunning. The jewelery is magnificent.
Good continuation with your work Princess Mary with this much needed organisation.

deadeggs, I agree with you. This photo was already taken a couple of years ago. But I am sure nobody complain with it being posted with the announcement of her 10th year of patronage of UNFPA. And I also agree with deadeggs, about Mary's involvement, in this much needed organisation that tries to keep an eye on the world's exploding population!

Very regal Mary! Admire her work ethic, her involvement in so many worthy causes, including this role for UNFPA, she seems to be genuinely interested in everything she does - brava! Since this is a fashion blog, one little quibble: that badly creased part on the right shoulder of her dress is very unfortunate, no sth that you would expect from the always-well-groomed Mary, especially for what looks like an official photo, in full regalia.... I know that silk (which seems to be the fabric of the dress) is difficult to maneuver and requires skillful handling, especially around the edges and seams, but this should be no excuse for a haute couture piece.... Puzzling.... Regardless, she remains one of the best dressed, stylish and elegant royal ladies and with real substance beyond the looks

    1. Well spotted E.M. I didn't notice the crease in her dress as I was too binded by the jewels.
If it's used as an official photo, a quick bit of work with "photoshop" would solve the problem.

The silk fabric is certainly difficult to sew;who ever made this frock was not a seamstress ;as while they were sewing the neck line this has gathered up;and they haven't done anything about it ;also when you cut the pattern out there are like little extra pieces that you cut,so this does not happen The colour of the dress is striking. The head piece looks quite modern not as striking as the necklace and earrings.Mary was such a plain girl in her youth;look at her now.(Tara)

Crown Princess Mary will indeed be a magnificent Queen and It is obvious why Queen Margrethe has so much confidence in Mary when she takes over the role of Queen. It bothers me that the words "the commoner from down under" are often associated with the mention of her name. There are other crown Princess's and Queens who are commoners and that word is not associated with their name like it is with my all time favorite Crown Princess Mary of Denmark!!!

"Commoner" is still a dirty word in some upper crust circles. I take offense to it as well.

    2. The word "commoner" was used a lot in Australia by the snobbish colonial families to underline their superiority.
Another popular usage was the word "little". For example, my little cleaning lady, my little ironing lady, my little dressmaker, my little cook etc. This was to help underline the lady of the house's snobbish superiority. Their life was in a vacuum, more English than England.
These snobbish colonists must be turning in their graves to see their little commoner from down under, Tasmania, in line to be the next Queen of one of the oldest Royal houses in the world.

Anon 1:28 AM, well she is already an official Regent, and she can stand in for the queen, when overseas or something. And with all respect, I am holding my breath, for that day, when she don't have to curtsy anymore to other European queens.

  8. This has always been one of my favourite photos of the Princess. Love the regal jewels, they are superb. The gown she wore here was splendid.

I think the photo is at least 10 years old. CP Mary has changed the tiara,it looks different on new photos.
When the time comes Mary Donaldson will be Denmark's first "commoner" Queen, but far from the first in Europe.
Some anti-royalists find her very dominating and say she will become "King Mary".

Well Mary is so lovely and fresh, pretty. The word Upper crust sounds a bit like a pie that has gone stale. The word little on such things is meant to be endearing;not derogatory,we are best friends with our nanny. As a descendant of colonial settlers in Australia;we have the squattocracy(rich land owners who settled the land in the early days)The word commoner is so over used;it makes a them and us;so while you think that;really it is all to do with the wrapping;gold paper or......Many educated people are so intelligent;that is why the royals employ smart people. The royals never have to go to a party and find it difficult to speak to people, they go with somebody who introduces them around .Rich people never talk about money;it is the people with new money who do.Tasmania is so beautiful;and Mary is a fantastic Ambassador

I am surprised that the term "upper class, middle class, commoner" is still used in English-speaking countries, and these are supposedly countries with a long democratic tradition.
No one uses these terms in my country. In the former Czechoslovakia (now the Czech and Slovak Republics), aristocratic titles were abolished in 1918. The term "higher class, lower class" is degrading and is a sign of contempt for others. The English obsession with noble titles is ridiculous for us.

Mary is an intelligent, well educated woman who has a strong working ethic. She has real substance for many issues she is working with, just like Maxima. Their countries can be very proud of their "commoner" royals.
Mary has also a real sense of style. - Siri

Fantastic article read and HRH Princess Mary looking stunning. A beautiful healthy woman doing a lovely act of kindness. May HRH Mary flourish in good health, passing to her family and even when HRH is queen may she stay this way too. HRH Prince Frederik picked a truly remarkable woman and may all men be fortunate enough to get a woman like her, or even half. And yes that last sentence was opinionated but me being honest. Really wonderful article read. How lovely indeed.

  12. I know the Australians, and particularly the Tasmanians rightly regard Princess Mary as their own but her parents are Scots, so we feel especially proud of her too
