Swedish Royal Family watched Nutcracker at the Royal Opera

Yesterday afternoon, King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Estelle of Sweden visited the Royal Opera to watch a performance by the Royal Ballet. The Royal family watched Nutcracker of Pjotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, performed by the Royal Ballet, which is accompanied by the Royal Swedish Orchestra. After the performance, King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Estelle met with all the actors on the stage. 1. Lovely setting and occasion! While I’m not generally much of a fan of pantsuits, Queen Silvia’s ensemble is so spiffy and elegant on her that I can’t not love it. Victoria’s skirt is beautiful, but challenging to coordinate with a top. I keep wanting to see it as a full-length evening skirt paired with an elegant blouse in a woven fabric. Knit or heavy tops can look awkward tucked into a waistband; it’s impossible to tell what Victoria’s top is made of, but it appears to be bunching a bit at the waistline. This fabulous skirt is worth working with to find just the right coordinating piece!

  2. Là, je préfère Victoria vêtue de cette jolie jupe imprimée avec le corsage noir qui est beaucoup plus élégant que le blanc... Boucles d'oreilles et collier assortis... Bien mignonne Estelle !

  4. The king and queen are remarkable. Just returned from a 4-day official visit to India (and a very active one at that), and first thing they do back home is going to the opera. Most people in their 70s would rest and recover from jetlag, but not these two. And they look fabulous. Victoria and Estelle also very charming.

I agree. I hope one of the reasons to visit the ballet was to be with their granddaughter for these special events. Her smile and wonder are worth memories. G

    2. Agree! And next week is full of Nobel engagements! They will certainly have deserved their Christmas holidays afterwards!

@Vanessa, maybe because most people in their seventies do not travel on planes with real beds and showers, and are subjects to gruesome border controls which are exhausting in itself, especially in India....

    4. Lily - I get your point. You´re right that royals travel more comfortable and are able to skip border controls thanks to their diplomat status. Also, they don´t need to book hotels or worry about airport transfers etc. All true. But that was not my point. Most people in their seventies would not keep up that pace, with one thing planned after the other, actively taking part (not just attending but holding speeches, greeting dignitaries and enganging with people and participating hands-on in projects), and everything in the public eye as well. It takes focus and preparation. And if you look at the photos from their India trip you can see that they, within that short time frame, even did some domestic travel and had some very active outdoor activities scheduled. I admire the king and queen for that. I hope that I, when I´m that age, will be able to be that active.
As for flights: In this particular case actually the state plane had technical issues so they borded a regular flight to go to India. They flew first class, but I doubt they had beds and showers. Also, there are photos of the king carrying his own luggage. And in any case, no matter how comfortably you travel, you cannot escape jetlag.

Vanessa, true, they seem to be very fit but they are not that old, 73 and 76........ since I am in my sixties and my husband in his seventies I look differently at their age....We travel as well and we still have jobs as well...... and even without all the privileges these people have, we manage travelling and working upon returning as well. I therefore do not find it particularly admirable.

    8. Well, I am younger than the king and queen of Sweden and I couldn’t keep up the pace they have just demonstrated. I agree with Vanessa; her remarks are perfectly valid.

People are different, and fitness is certainly encouraged for individuals of all ages more now than once was the case — but these days it is almost treated as a crime to admit that being 75 is not the same as being 35. Nothing wrong with admiring Silvia and Carl Gustaf for managing to be so active at their age.

  9. What stamina the King and Queen have, marvellous. The Queen looks lovely, her jacket is the perfect fit, colour is very festive. Princess Estelle is such a happy little girl always smiling, she is growing up. A credit to her mother.
