Norwegian Royal family attended 2019 Nobel Peace Prize Banquet at the Grand Hotel

On December 10, 2019, King Harald V, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway attended Nobel Peace Prize Banquet Dinner held at Oslo Grand Hotel, in honour of Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. Prime Minister Abiy has been awarded 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for “his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea.” (The Crown Princess wore a new maxi gown by Pia Tjelta. 1. Mrs Ali's gorgeous navy dress is the winner here for me though I also like Mette-Marit's beautiful gown. I want to like Queen Sonia's red gown but the frills and odd length don't work well IMO

  2. Mette-Marit's gown is very nice. This was her day for winter white. I love the picture of MM and Prince Haakon holding hands. It is so sweet. Queen Sonja's is usually dressed very conservatively. With the shorter length, and the gauzy fabric, this red-tiered gown seems more youthful that she is accustomed to choosing, and it's a pleasant surprise. She is such a class act. Mrs. Ely's dark blue gown and jewels are beautiful. The unnamed lady in the fuchsia down with black over-blouse looks very nice as well.

Maybe it's my computer.but I couldn't see the detail on Mette-Marit's gown. I liked the style, but couldn't really see it. Same for Queen Sonja's. But I'm not that crazy about the color. My favorite was the one with the orchid/lavender skirt and black lace top. The other gown - the navy blue one with the V neck - I liked the style, but couldn't see the detail. Still, they all looked lovely and I liked their posture as they stood for the group photo. They managed to look at ease and casual, but still formal.

    2. Thank you for the link. It was nice to see the beautiful dress "in it's full glory" Once again one must say winter white is Mette-Marit's colour. She shines in this soft colour. It was also interesting to read about the designer Pia Tjelta, I thought the dress was custom made for Mette-Marit and the Nobel Prize event, but there are pictures where Pia Tjelta wears the dress herself and seeing the dress on her I must say the alterations for Mette-Marit didn't serve the dress well. On Pia the pleated part is larger and starts right under the knees so the dress has more of a fishtail vibe. And yes I can't say it enough, having a good posture, standing upright, shoulders back, well every dress looks that much better.

Thank you anonymous for the link. I really loved seeing the dress with its
detail. I never noticed the bottom ruffle with the embellishments. It makes all the difference to get a good picture. Thank you again.

    Rozczarowana strasznie :(

  7. Mette-Marit looks very pretty and angelic. Queen Sonia is a fail for me, too many flounces and the color doesn't look good on her.

  8. MM is wearing a new gown from Pia Tjelta and she is looking great in it. So are the rest also 😉

  9. I like the navy gown of the laureate´s wife best as well. She is also wearing very tasteful jewellery that looks wonderful against the dark skin.

I like Mette-Marit´s gown, it is beautifully simple and fits her well. Less is always more. It had been even better without the ruffle at the bottom. And she really needs better posture. But still looking lovely.

I don´t like Sonja´s outfit. It´s a bit overloaded with details and looks cluttered. And it´s not formal enough for the occasion. Being the queen and hosting this major event of international significance, she should have gone for something more regal and grand.

And lastly, I think that Haakon needs a new suit. I´m not a fan of blue for a black tie event, and I feel that this double-breasted style isn´t right here (save that for day purposes, not for a formal dinner). If it at least had fit him properly, but it just looks terrible (with that massive black sporty wristwatch adding to the sloppy look).

    1. @Vanessa, I so agree on Haakon's outfit, we seem to forget often about the men's appearance. He does need some help choosing his outfits, but I am afraid he does not care a bit. At least he is not wearing his brown suede loafers ;-)). That watch is hideous. It looks like some plastic watch for 20.- Euros.

As you do I also do not like ruffles, frills, pussy bows and so on, this is why I won't comment on Queen Sonja's dress. I would have nothing nice to say. She is known for a clean and classic style, I dont undestand this choice of dress at all.

Mette-Marit's dress is in fact a very good design by norwegian designer Pia Tjelta. It suits her well, she mostly looks well in soft colours and off-white. A commenter above has thankfully added the follwing link https://www.minmote.no/#!/artikkel/24751224/mette-marit-i-spesialdesignet-norsk-kjole-paa-nobel
where you can see the designer wearing the dress herself and you may understand how it was meant to be. The bottom part, the 'ruffle' ;-)) was meant to begin right under the knee and so create an almost fishtail-like silhouette. The original design looks really good, but as Mette-Marit is very tall, the dress got adjusted and lost its twist.
Like you I would say, that the dress would look much better with a good posture, standing upright and shoulders back - and Pssst! - a good supporting bra would also help.

    1. Yes, my first thought I saw the pictures of her during the last weeks was: she lost weight.

Her dress is so nice and perfect for her.

    2. It looks as if she's lost some weight. Good for her. She looks much better and healthier than the years before. It is far away from being 'skinny'.
