The Duchess of Sussex visited Luminary Bakery in London

Earlier this week, The Duchess of Sussex visited the women of Luminary Bakery to celebrate the opening of their new location. Luminary Bakery, which the Duchess of Sussex also featured in the issue of Vogue she guest-edited, is a social enterprise in Stoke Newington which aims to empower some of the UK's most socially and economically disadvantaged women. It offers training programmes which teach women to bake to a professional standard, and achieve a Level 2 Food Hygiene Qualification. The Duchess wore a new white and midnight blue stripe shirt by WNU.

Meghan looks good in shirts and this is another nice one. I like the soft drape of the sweater/blazer very much as well. Given that she donned an apron and was working around food, this would have been a good opportunity to have worn her hair tied back.

  2. Meghan has such a lovely face, so evident in the first and third photos. The shirt is fine and I really like the earrings. However, don't understand how anyone is allowed to work with food without tying hair back or pinning it up.

Agree, she has such a lovely face. Her outfit is a very chic. Tying hair back is a thing of big kitchens in these days.Jamie Oliver and other TV chefs have established less strict rules.

Or a net, or covered somehow. Besides, her hair is untidy that long, and she has to shove it out of her face, not recommended near food. Not bashing her but...

She looks good. If I had to nit-pick; would have preferred hair pulled back, or up, neatly since working with food is involved. But other than that, I like her outfit and I think she wears it well. Looks like everyone had a great time - and it's a good cause. Personally, I have a huge sweet tooth so I'm all in! They had me at "Hello." LOL.

The blue/white shirt/blouse was nice and crisp looking, however, working/or around food, she should have tied her hair back in a low bun or ponytail.

Agree. The outfit is good but the hair could be tidier. To be fair though, there are others in attendance with loose hair. (V.M.)

Shirt is fine. I wear such clothes for a walk.I wonder what shoes she wore to this set. Too bad we don't see them in the photo.
I don't like her hair. It is absolutely unacceptable to have such hair when cooking, baking or doing any food work. I am sensitive to hygiene in the kitchen and I would not eat something prepared by someone who constantly pokes his hair through his fingers.

Agree with you. A very nice outfit (she looks great) especially for a walk but for a royal visit I would have thought a nice navy midi skirt & flats with the camel belt would have been nicer as most ladies looked like they dressed up for her visit.

"It offers training programs that teach women to bake to a professional standard, and achieve Level 2 Food Hygiene Qualification." It seems they have not yet taken a lesson: how to dress and what hair to have when preparing food.

Such a critical audience about the hair. Is nobody out there who is appreciating that she is still there and not has given up?

Please keep up your spirit Duchess Meghan.

    1. Bravo Meghan. Please turn a deaf ear to the above negative comments. You are in a no win situation. Your work for such a good cause is well noted, even if only (sadly) by a few. The simplicity of your outfit is correct for the occasion.

Charity is not about the patron - about her.
A woman poking her hair through her fingers cannot have clean hands. There are traces of hair cosmetics (hair spray, hair mousse, keratin) on the fingers. People with allergies (like me) are very sensitive to this. It's less hygienic than a man brushing his chest hair with his fingers, and then he would stir your food with those fingers.

It terms of time, the cake had to be made and displayed before Meghan arrived. She helped to put the decorative touches to it. How can we tell that she did not wash her hands prior to touching the fruit? ...Apron in what looks to be a kitchen area to decorate,... no apron while standing with the group and cutting the cake. Touching the hair and no apron seems to have happened during the group discussion. @ 3:09 this may not the bakery for your delicate sensitivities, there is a lot of unbound hair in these pictures. There is also a sequence to the event that is evident...if you are focusing on the good intentions of the charity and the benefit to the ladies who have suffered abuse. -Belle

She won't give up. Whether you are of the mindset that she found her meal ticket for life or she truly married for love, either way I do not think she will give up.

    8. Why would making perfectly valid comments about her hair being loose in the kitchen not be appropriate? Of course, it absolutely applies to the other women in the same situation but they are not the subject of the post. This is not criticism of her support for the organisation or of the organisation itself.

  11. It seems to me that it escapes some of the readers that this cake was just a photo op to showcase the charity. Maybe it would have looked better if everybody had nets while fiddling with the food, obviously the organizers could be better skilled in the optics department. I am positive that she wasnt mixing flour and lard and waited around until it was fully baked , she just put a little decoration on top and then proceed to cut one slice, just as anybody would
do at a party. For such avid blog readers and very opinionated experts, you are really making ridiculous statements, conflating hygiene in food preparation, and a photo op.... really ladies!!!

Not trying to be critical but has to agree about the unsafe, unsanitary ways she carries on around food prep area. It's not about you. It's health safety for everyone. So gloves and hairnet or hat should have been used.
Many people look at thes photos and will be turn off by unsanitary practice and will less likely order from the bakery perhaps.
Doing good work does not have to sacrifice safe health/sanitary practice.
For every misstep is a learning opportunity so don't fret. Just have to learn and not repeat that.

  14. It looks like all she was doing was adding a few fruits & decorations to the top of the cake & cutting it, she wasn't actually stirring ingredients & baking. Her apron strap held part of her hair back, no worse than the woman standing next to her w hair hanging to her shoulders from a ponytail. Others in the room had loose hair. The only pic w her fingers in her hair is w her coat on--obviously she was leaving. This constant criticism is uncalled for, it's nothing short of bullying.

Criticism is not bullying! Everyone has the right to an opinion, even a critical opinion. I hope that PR agency Sunshine Sachs (hired by Meghan) is following such discussions and advising her, among other things: not to keep her hair over her fingers - it is a sign of nervousness. I think the clothes are fine, but only the clothes don't make the lady. I say it not to the Duchess, but to the girls in general.

You are right that clothes don’t make a lady, and neither do your comments.

Opinions should never wander away from the topic. Mentioning things that have nothing to do with the appearance of today such as giving out the name of her PR agency. Really? "I think the clothes are fine, but only the clothes don't make the lady. I say it not to the Duchess, but to the girls in general" ...very 'inspirational'. These women (victims of abuse) are trying to acquire a skill that earns an income..in other articles it was said that one of them was stabbed several times by an ex partner... now they are told that they are not ladies? Prior knowledge should tell us that cakes have to be baked, and cooled for hours before being decorated. ...nothing to do with a photo op to advertise their shop. -B.

    4. Since this was a PR engagement/celebration and the public was not being served anything, it seems to me the hair rules were put aside for the time being. Friends of mine who work in restaurants tell me the hair is never supposed to be worn so as to have strands of hair falling into the food. But I think here with a staged photo , and the in-house party atmosphere, I think the photo is fine. It seems no one was "on duty" in a professional capacity. I'm sure these women, when on the job will know what the rules are. I'm giving Meghan and all the rest of them a pass on this one.

I wish her all good. And that's why I'll give her good advice: get rid of your PR agency. I know very well how such agencies improve the image of their client. They will make sure that the photo of their client from a charity project is in all the media. The best picture is with children, handicapped people and ideally with handicapped children. In the last 5 years, a photo with abused and suffering women has been in demand. Princess Anne or Countess of Wessex can do charity without a PR agency (why aren't they more publicized?). Just be honest and don't try to be a popular star at all costs.
PS: Hygiene rules also apply when decorating food.

@1:04 These are exactly the reasons why Meghan has had a difficult time. No empathy. This person suggests that people of unfortunate circumstances are trotted out and used by 'royalty' as a vehicle for photo ops, then put back into their 'places' until the next royal comes along. The value of the publicity of the bakery, the clients it might attract or the next group of women to sign up for classes are all lost under the sarcasm of keyboard warriors with no agenda other than to criticize. Arriving in outfits that can feed a family for weeks, shaking hands and sitting with the unfortunates, taking pretty pictures, then returning to opulence are approved ways to 'do a charity', for our esteemed @1:04. This 'help' is often negated by the cost of security to the public purse, the traffic diversions, children out of school (flag wavers are a must). It seems, the Sussexes are looking behind the scenes to get more of a community involvement into their projects and possible employment for some of them.
Before throwing out the 'popular star' at all costs???, also consider that the royal activities are published, and photogs can go to the events or get news of the visit from their websites. Sophie and Anne have been settled in their roles for years, and are not worth exploiting (Sophie was hounded in the beginning) for click bait.

This festive outfits of the ladies give the impression that the cake was made and left plain for the photo op/party. Let us not be hypocrites, many a mother has made and served birthday and other cakes to family and friends, without hairnets. -Belle

I think this was an in-house celebration for Meghan and the others, so the rules were relaxed for the party. The cake was probably meant for them to eat. They did not appear to be serving the public. This was just a photo op. I'm sure when these ladies are on the job, they will follow the proper hygiene rules. I've posted on this before, but it hasn't shown up. Maybe I did something wrong, so am repeating here. I give Meghan and the others a pass on this.
