King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima's state visit to India

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima are currently making a state visit to the Republic of India at the invitation of President Ram Nath Kovind. The state visit began in New Delhi, where President Ram Nath Kovind and First Lady Savita Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the King and Queen at the Rashtrapati Bhavan presidential palace. After the welcoming ceremony, flowers were strewn at the Raj Ghat monument, the memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. The King and Queen then met with the Minister of External Affairs, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

  1. The queen looked very good; I like the dress, but perhaps better suited for a wedding or reception than a day time function. I am not sure that the off-the-shoulder look is really appropriate in this setting.

    1. That was my immediate reaction too. The dress isn´t bad (though a bit too fussy for my liking), but it is too glam for a day event (and a solemn wreath laying no less), and it is too formal for a cocktail night. It´s somewhere in between, and while the gray colour is muted and appropriate for this occasion, I too find the kind-of-bare shoulder inappropriate.
The king looks fabulous. The beard makes him very handsome, and overall, he´s aging very well.

  2. Not crazy about the fussiness of tulle here. If a draped effect (charmingly suggestive of the folds in a sari) was desired, a scarf would have been better, imo -- and the hat definitely didn't need a tulle embellishment.

  3. mooie jurk en van Natan, had ik niet gedacht

  4. I can't help but feel that Maxima received a different invitation to the event than everyone else- she's too dressed. The color of the dress is pretty but I prefer the model's bordeaux colored accessories.

  5. Finally looking good again! This is how I know her.
The dress is a bit too tight, but it's Natan so we could know that. But the dress itself, her hair and hat... very nice. The shoulder part of the dress is the only thing I'm not very fond of.

  6. Wow Maxima looks regal. Love all the details of her look . Her hair style is absolutely fabulous . I think they both look great.

  7. Zu viel Tüll und Spitze. Ich finds nicht berauschend. Das Kleid sitzt auch ein bisschen zu eng. Schade.

  8. I am not sure what to say. Maxima's dress and hat just doesn't seem appropriate for an official event. The fabric is not really a good choice for that kind of climate either. This is a no for me.

  9. Queen Maxima's dress might be a tad too formal, but I do love the color. Her hair is very nice and the hat/headpiece is okay. I do not like the wild array of stiff lace of the dress and hat, and the stiffness of the lace/netting must be uncomfortable. The dress would be gorgeous, I think, if the fabric was soft and smooth. Overall, I think she looks very nice, and, I must say, King Willem looks very dashing in his navy blue suit. His beard is trimmed neatly which improves his looks.

    1. Agree with your assessment -- different fabric, same solemn color would have improved this look considerably. And in my opinion it is too tight around at the waist and abdomen. Somehow, that always detracts from the most lovely of outfits. But obviously, we are all "over the moon" about her hair.l

  10. The dress is a good colour, good length and a pretty good fit. I find the tulle overdone, both on the dress and especially on the hat. But her hair looks beautiful and the jewelry she’s chosen is lovely too. Yes it’s a dressy look, but perhaps they were on their way to another more formal event? (V.M.)

  11. I wanted to like this dress, because the color is elegant and the length and silhouette are flattering, but I can't. all that tulle, and lace reminds me of a spider web, it also looks like it may scratch your skin, the scarf like collar only helps to drive the eyes to her bust, that is in much need of a good brassiere, it absolutely has the vibe of a cocktail dress more than a day event. The hat looks fine at a distance, but once up close is just as bad. Nathan should be sent back to the island.
On a positive note, the earrings are fabulous, and the hair looks great.

  12. I feel like I should say, "what is happening here?" Maxima just looks so odd and out of place. That dress is a mess, the netting is just awkward, and the hat, whew. I root for her so much, she seems like an intelligent, engaged, warm queen. She just can't get the fashion down.

  13. I do not see this as a day dress at all, unless possibly for a wedding. I think this is almost a cring-worthy moment when seeing the elegant simplicity of the host country. This dress makes me think of Henry Higgins saying, "I despise those gowns with sort of weeds here and weeds there." As usual, she has accessorized to the hilt, even adding a piece to her hat. While the camel gloves do disappear, they were not necessary--especially leather gloves. I think her jewelry is beautiful, but paying respect to Mahatma Gandhi was the wrong time to display them. Happily, her hair is well done. That is something.

  14. I love it! Beautiful colour. The dress is a bit tight (it's Nathan), but the wild array makes the dress fun.
    Good job!!!

  15. Yes, the dress is very formal but I'm quite sure the protocol says so. It is a sign of showing respect to the visited country and the host to dress in best clothes. And don't forget: Maxima is a real Queen of a really existing country. Something that has to be visible from afar. Besides, I really like the dress and would kill for the aquamarine and diamond brooch. Christine

  16. Maxima looks fantastic, the colour of the dress is great. But.. that.. I don't find good words in english for that... ruffles of tulle? omg... that looks really odd. Without that it would be a perfect look.

  17. From the head up she looks ok , from the waist down not so much. Ill fitting lace dress with tulle around the neck. Ugly.

  18. Oh dear this recycled gauze from a well used food sieve to trim all that lace is just taking recycling a bit too far.

  19. The colour, hair and jewelery look gorgeous on her but the design ugh! Nathan go back to your Island never to return

  20. Agreed with all the comments above, dress is too formal for a day event. Love the color and the lace, nice hair and beautiful jewerly.

    1. State visits are formal - pomp and ceremony!
      Hat and gloves required.

  21. oh to only once being able to raid her jewelry vault - those aquamarines are simply exquisite! The colour and cut of the dress are beautiful, but IMO the only excuse for that overdose use of netting would be if it was recycled plastic waste, fished right out of the ocean

  22. This is one ugly dress, same applies to the hat..... Other much appreciated commentators before me explained very well the wrongs of both. The only thing I would like to add that the dress is also not very flattering for the silhouette, giving the impression of a middle aged woman in the wrong way in some pics....

    1. Making her clients look older, fatter and squeezed into wrinkled clothes a size too small seems to be the aim of Natan designers. Máxima looked much better in the well cut Claes Iversen red suit that she wore at her arrival in India.

  23. Interesting that the king chose to change his suit for the afternoon event, but the queen kept the same dress.

  24. I am thinking of starting a Queen Max defence group like those that exist on this blog for the Duchess of Sussex or Queen Letizia. As soon as either criticised, others leap to their defence. Queen Maxima is intelligent, always smiling and enthusiastic and does a great job for the Netherlands. Some of her outfits are awful but this is not one of them. The tulle is overdone but she has addressed many of the other previous comments. The dress is a good colour, it’s a decent length and a great colour. A hat would have been desirable if not essential for this kind of formal event I think she looks great!

  25. Annie M, Just a little note, Máxima is not criticized by any of the bloggers above, so I don't t think she needs a defense attorney, people are commenting about her clothing, this is a fashion blog, and saying that a dress is ugly is just that, it has no bearing on her persona or her duties as a queen. The only instance where people come to other Royals defense is when the personal attacks, character judgements, and tabloids conspiracies start floating around.
Possibly because most of us want to keep this site as a civil fashion site, rather than a gossip & drama blog

    1. Hear hear..... I could not agree more, and since we taxpayers are funding her clothes, we have a certain right to the pleasure of expressing our opinion....😃

    2. Hi, Cherry. I don’t disagree with anything you say about civility and relevance. Like many others I appreciate your insightful comments and wise counsel when debates are getting heated. However, I do think Maxima gets a poor deal. Her clothes, yes as one would expect on this site, but also her appearance.
Usually her hair and occasionally her weight (was often implied rather than stated) The comments about her hair are often quite cruel (there may be medical reasons why it is so difficult to style, who knows?) This is a site about fashion but if you look back at criticism of clothes worn by the Duchess of Sussex in SA, there were those who jumped up and down and said you should not criticise because of the worthwhile causes she was visiting. It’s certainly more difficult to criticise Letizia’s choice of clothes but again there were comments recently when she was visiting a disaster area that her clothes were not the issue. That’s my only point

The Queen looks good, even though their is a lot going on with the dress. What caught my eye more was the magnificent jewels and how she used and utilised them. A aqua brooch in her hair (saw a side profile of her somewhere highlighting it), the aqua pear shaped brooch on her dress, the stunning aqua drop earrings. She has such flair when it comes to jewellery and is not frightened of applying it, more than less. Jewellery wise, absolutely beautiful choices and perfectly combined. Stunning.
