King Carl Gustaf declared a communiqué which determines the representatives of The Royal House

Yesterday, King Carl Gustaf decided to limit the number of persons to be included in the Royal House. The King decided that the children of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, and the children of Princess Madeleine and Christopher O’Neill will no longer be members of The Royal House. The purpose of the King's decision is to clarify which persons can be expected to perform official duties on the King's behalf.

Communiqué on changes to The Royal House

The King has decided on changes to The Royal House. The purpose of these changes is to establish which members of The Royal Family may be expected to perform official duties incumbent on the Head of State or related to the function of the Head of State.

The King has decided that the children of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, and the children of Princess Madeleine and Mr Christopher O’Neill will no longer be members of The Royal House. Prince Alexander, Prince Gabriel, Princess Leonore, Prince Nicolas and Princess Adrienne will continue to be members of The Royal Family. However, they will no longer enjoy the style of Royal Highness and, in the future, will not be expected to perform duties incumbent on the Head of State.

Prince Alexander (Duke of Södermanland), Prince Gabriel (Duke of Dalarna), Princess Leonore (Duchess of Gotland), Prince Nicolas (Duke of Ångermanland) and Princess Adrienne (Duchess of Blekinge) will retain their titles of Duke and Duchess previously granted by The King.

The King and The Crown Princess are, together with The Queen and Prince Daniel, Sweden’s highest representatives within the Realm and vis-à-vis other States.

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, and Princess Madeleine will continue their work in the non-profit foundations and organisations which they have founded or in which they are involved. In addition, they will perform official duties to the extent decided by the King.

After that decision, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine shared family photos on their Instagram accounts and stated that this change has been planned for a long time and that it is good that their children now have a greater opportunity to shape their own lives as individuals in the future.

Other royal families already apply this, its may not be called the same.
Monaco- only prince's legitimate children hold title
Britain- Prince Harry's child has no title
      etc

Prince Harry children will have titles when Prince Charles becomes the king I believe. That is the British Royal House law.

    5. Princess Anne's children do not hold any titles (and she's a child of a sovereign herself, just as Harry will be when Charles becomes king). It is entirely up to the parents not in direct line to the throne to decline or accept possible titles for their children, as did Anne, as did Harry. Later on Charles might offer Master Archie a title when he will be getting married. But it's something which is not set in stone, it could be handled completely different then.

It is not only about titles, they are not funded by the people, they need a job.

Princess Anne married a commoner and her children don't have a royal or noble title by birth only their mother has .That's why its up to the queen to offer them titles and because princess Anne doesn't want to her mother didn't offer them. Just wait and watch the events .

    1. Totally agree, it's a way of showing that they're staying with the times. Only the ones actually working should be HRH. The dress on Victoria is very nice.

Agreed. Money spent on those individuals could be spent more wisely. See refuge crisis.

@Anon 5:42PM: You make it sound like younger royals were big burden to the Swedish tax payers. The Swedish monarchy costs each Swede 13 SEK ($1.82) a year. A year!
Madeleine and Carl Philip do not have paid off households like their parents and older sister Victoria do. Madeleine & Carl Philip only get paid when they work. No work = no money.
Madeleine & Carl Philip have not been burden to Sweden. Cosidering how many fans they have, they rather raise interest in Sweden, its tourism and culture (i.e visit Sweden and support its tourism).
As to spending money on refugees. Is it really wiser cost? There are already too many refugees/immigrants in Europe. We can not maintain all Africa or Asia at our taxes; bend to their demands and needs. Sorry. But no.

In Spain only Felipe, Letizia and their daughters are Royal Family. Juan Carlos'sisters got married to "normal" persons with a normal job....in Spain it is done long time ago..
They have a salary as they were the Head of State of a Republic (Macron, Steinneier....)...

    2. I'm Spanish and we distinguish between the Royal Family and the King's family. The Royal Family includes King Felipe and Queen Letizia, their daughters and the former King and Queen. Infantas Elena and Cristina and their children don't belong to the Royal Family but they all are King's family.

    3. I think its a very intelligent decission. Monarchy has to acomplish to modern times and there's no reason to keep such crowd of family enjoying the royal privileges.

I'm Norwegian, and I think it's fine. It's not like Princess Märtha Louise's children have any royal titles, so it's completely normal to me. ML doesn't have any title either, but she's still a princess.

All children of Victoria will be members of the Royal House. The gouvernement is responsebility and pay only for the members of the Royal House. Just the same as we have already in the Netherlands since 2013 when Willem-Alexander became our new King.

I was a bit surprised by this news. So how will this affect a new baby being born, will also get Prince/ ss without the HRH and a Duchy? This move will put a lot of pressure on the CPss couple.Love the dresses of mother and daughter. Sofia's'coat seems nice and warm. Alexander and Gabriel sure are cute, beautiful fall picture the leaves are turning yellow. So are the 3 little one's in Florida.

I do not think that they are so watched at all.Nowadays they attend normal schools, in Scandinavia even public schools and have a private life. They are educated since a child...and they do not have too much responsabilities, these royals do not have any power at all and they do not take decisions, there is a govermment.

It has been reported that even the prince of Wales is considering to cut down the number of persons belonging to the royal family as soon as he becomes king.

Only UK still has a very large royal family. Should change that aswell, especially the Yorks, they do not seem to have a real life.

  14. To follow your comment, Margot, the Prince of Wales has already stated that the working Royal Family should, longer term, consist only of himself, his sons and their children. As people like the Gloucesters, the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra get older, I do wonder who will take on their roles and patronages. Both Princess Anne and the Earl of Wessex have always declared that they do not wish their children to be regarded as working royals. I really wish that Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were included, though it seems unlikely that Prince Charles will reconsider this

The flip side of the photo of the entire family this summer was that the citizens got to see how many people without a profession or evident survival skills the country supports. Parents insist that their children study and work because the future is uncertain. The same should apply here. Abby

I really love Carl Philip's new family photo. They all look great and those colorful leaves make such a stunning picture. Also loved pic of Madeleine and her children.
Madeleine and Carl Philip's responses to the news that their children lost their HRHs were so lovely and classy. I like them even more after their generous and kind statements. Its not easy to live in Victoria's shadows.
However, I really hope that we will get regular updates on five grandchildren as well, and not only on Estelle and Oscar! Leonore, Nicolas, Adrienne, Alexander and Gabriel are darlings and its always great to see them.
I am a little worried that kungahuset.se no longer include family pictures of prince and princess couple (e.g. this pic of Carl Philip family was not at their site, just as his summer greeting, they can be only seen on his instagram account). Hope the court won't go so extreme as to exclude all those family pics!

So Madeleine, Carl Philip (and Sofia) were told to give way to the Crown Princess family. Madeleine probably will never come back to Sweden full time now, only for summers perhaps. Carl Philip+Sofia just hang around, with not much to do. They will perform official duties to the extent decided by His Majesty. If all is done/taken by the royal and crown princess couples, then not much left for minor royals.

But I really liked Prince and Princess couples dignified responses to this news. Well done and very classy!

BTW: Lovely picture of Prince Carl Philip's family and Princess Madeleine with her children. Its always pleasure to see them. -- Marika

  21. Its good they finally made it clear who are the working royals in the Swedish Royal Family! Too often Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine are accused of being lazy and working less than others, however, this message clearly say that they will perform official duties to the extent decided by His Majesty.
