The Duchess of Sussex shared new photos of her Smart Works visit on her Instagram account

Yesterday, The Duchess of Sussex announced in September issue of British Vogue magazine, for which she is the guest editor, that she is creating a workwear clothing collection, which will be available at British retailers in the fall. The collection will be sold for the benefit of the London charity Smart Works. Smart Works helps provide clothing and interview coaching to unemployed women in two-hour appointments. Yesterday, The Duchess shared more information about that new project on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's official Instagram account. The Duchess also shared previously unseen photos of her visit to Smart Works, which will benefit from her new project.

    She's a designer or a Duchess?
    Because I'm lose in it.

She's a Duchess in a unique position to make a difference and to help those in need.
More than that, she is a woman with a sense of creativity who is helping to advance other other women.
That's about all you need to know, or worry about.

@Anon 3:58PM Oh but she clearly asked whether Meghan was a Duchess OR a designer. Why "or"? Can't a modern woman be both these days? My response expressed that this Duchess is both, and so she has nothing more to know or worry about, or 'be lose in it.'

And if you are of similar scepticism without any stated basis, my response is equally applicable to you.

  3. Still busy behind the scenes while heavily pregnant. Nice, good for her!
Smart outfits and I like her hair in all pictures.

  4. First the fashion--I am thrilled to see the vintage Courrèges coat again. I am in love with it.

I like the idea of Meghan's new capsule collection to benefit Smart Works. She has designed clothes before, and Smart Works is such a worthy cause. There is something about women supporting women that has a particular beauty, and bringing more attention to Smart Works will help even more women. There are comments from time to time that she does not do much. I think this shows that she has taken her duty as Patroness of Smart Works very seriously. She didn't stop at donating her own clothes and making an official visit, she has taken this to heart. Her collection will sell quickly, and one piece is donated to the charity for each piece sold. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for her to have such negative things being said about her when in reality she is working quietly, getting things done. We are not owed the details of every move the members of the BRF make. When the time is right, the proper announcements will be made. If the Queen did not approve, she would step in. I hope this does not get as ugly as the last post did.

Agree. I love seeing this coat again and look forward to seeing Meghan’s capsule collection.
I would like to see her rewear the Gucci dress now that’s she’s not pregnant. Some of her fashion choices while she was pregnant were not my favorite. The non-maternity clothes while beautiful were not designed for a growing belly. No matter how well made or tailored they simply do not fall the way they were designed to on a pregnant figure.

I hope Meghan continues to do her passion projects and sheds light on issues that are close to her heart. It cannot be easy to settle into your life as a member of the royal family, new mom, deal with family issues which we all have but luckily for us aren’t played out in the newspaper.

Love the Gucci dress but not as a maternity dress. What a waste of money. I read it cost $4000. Plus it is insensitive to wear such an expensive dress to a charity that dresses underprivileged women. That is why MM gets negative comments. She doesn't think about the appearance of how she does things looks to people less fortunate than her. Plus I don't think she is working quietly when she ends up publishing pictures to let everyone know what she has been doing.

    2. I understand what you mean, I really do. But isn't it possible that she still has to get used to her 'new' life? Yes, she may not be totally new anymore, but she is just a member of the Royal Family for a year, alright, a bit longer.
I think there is too much hunting and nitpicking about her. I often understand the reactions and complaints, I sometimes even agree with them. But I still think we should give Meghan more time to settle in and find her place. She lived a total different life before and now has to apply to all sort of rules, protocols, expectations... She might not be used to them like Kate, Maxima, Mary etc. who are already royals for years. Everyone makes mistakes, and that's allowed. But not for Meghan...

    3. Rosalyn, you are a very friendly person. Your comment is well balanced and you could be right as for Meghan, it surely is not easy to find ones place in such a traditional institution like the British Royal Family, especially when one did not grow up in that country! But I must say I just find her implausible. Same with her husband: Harry joined a celebrity-event, sponsored by Google, on climate change - and he and all the Katy Perrys and Orlando Blooms who took part went there by private jet. Alltogether there were more than 100 planes...this is hypocrisy, isn't it!

I think we’ll see the dress again. It can be fixed. Meghan seems like a reasonable person and she will use her clothes more than once. But please notice that she has been working with royal family a very short time. And most of the time pregnant. I’m ready to bet we’ll see this and many other outfits over and over again.

    6. Coralie, thank you for your kind reaction. You are nice and friendly too!
I didn't know about the event you wrote about. And if that is indeed the case, than it is odd, thats true. On the other hand, there are always things and events that are on the contrary side. I mean, lots of Royals do amazing work but often it's far from home and the best way to get there, is by plane. I understand what you mean and I agree that the actions/ deeds Royals do, not always correspondent with their words, but I'm afraid there is not a simple solution for it.

  6. The coat will never go out of style. It could easily have been worn by Jackie O.
The wonderful thing about Meghan's projects is that there are actual deliverables that can net a profit for the charity. The cookbook, and these outfits are perfect examples. She is quietly finding meaningful work. If we need a parallel, there is Princess Angela of Lichtenstein. Of African heritage, was a designer/self made woman, pursued by a much younger prince and married into a royal family. She continued to design a label under her new name.

The Royal family of Liechtenstein is quite different from that of the UK. Only the reigning prince and the hereditary prince family are supported by taxpayers money. The rest are expected to provide for themselves, hence why they work. Princesses Angela is married to one of sons of the reigning Prince, her husband also works to support himself as is per the law in that country.

With regards to a working princess in the UK comparisons should be made in the UK. I believe the countess of Wessex used to work but I don't remember how that panned out though.

      Absolutely spot-on, Marigold.

Both Meghan and Harry are in a unique position to be just outside the official realm of Royal duty, but close enough to the spotlight to bring attention to whatever they do. They know this and are putting this unique situation to meaningful use with their work and charities.

  7. Fashionwise a desaster to wear this slim Gucchi-dress in late pregnancy. It does not look good, comfy or elegant, because it is simply not a maternity dress.

Well I desagree, during her pregnancy she failed time after time to wear well fitted cloths, for instance in the first pictures, with the Gucci dress, it doesn't look nice nor comfortable.
I'm also puzzeled, as anonymous @8:08 is she a celebrity or a Duchess?

... you'll see: The Duchess of Sussex 😉
Is a royal not allowed to do anything else than paying visits? Märtha Louise from Norway published a book, other royals sail, paint, fly... and Meghan likes to design. That's fine with me.

Meghan looks sweet. As Fergie and Prince Edward found out it is almost impossible for a royal to have business aspiration. Designing a line of clothes??not too sure...The Queen as you will notice in the past, she will not say anything until it impinges on what the role of the royal family is.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Anonymous2/8/19 08:47

Meghan is not going to design this line of clothes, she just acted as an intermediary between the retailers (M&S, jigsaw...) and a designer she knew... This has been explained by royal reporters and you can find the name of the future designer online. As for the fact that she wears a costly dress to talk to underpriviliged women, isn't it the case of all royals?? Kate first. Meghan donated some of her clothes to the charity, including some very nice clothes... When working behind the scenes, it is quite common for the royal family to release photos afterwards as we have seen for Kate and her garden for which she works for months, and here we can observe the same pattern for meghan.... Really double standards for these two women become very tiresome

The pregnancy is over, the dress is probably at the back of the closet but the critics get another swipe. The baby is 3 months old let's look ahead.
Her Majesty's outfits and those wonderful hats are all bespoke, as are some of Kate's 499 (I exaggerate) dress coats in Pantone shades of light blue. Meaning, that they are quite pricey but that is not remarked on.
@5:31 if she follows your formula she should 'Do Duchessing'. Failure lurks everywhere and no one will be 'puzzled'. Please note that in the 19th century, it was aristocratic women who took an active role (even getting their hands dirty) in setting up schools, hospitals, orphanages etc. and convinced their husbands to contribute, since most women did not manage their own money at that time. That is where these charity visits originated. The sky will not fall if Meghan adds a bit of modernity to the practice.

Meghan picks and chooses what events to go, not always doing what she should be doing as a member of the royal family . But she always makes sure when she does "good deeds" it is always well photographed and reported.

Before we rush to criticize D. Meghan’s latest venture, let’s not forget Queen Margarethe of Denmark who has been designing sets and costumes for ballet for almost 20 years, and Princess Madeleine of Sweden who is a published author. There is more than one way to be a member of a royal family. (V.M.)

  14. The very mean type of comments directed against this woman and others have caused me to stop reading all the comments. For instance, Charlene must be unhappy because she doesn’t smile all the time! How ridiculous to make that jump. This blog has been a great distraction in the last few years but the nastiness similar to the political arena has infected it. I will miss many of the real fashion contributors - it’s been fun.

Very much agree. I myself have been drawn into the "nonfashion" discussion in the last Meghan-posting for the first time (I have been an avid reader for years without saying anything, just for the fun of fashion talk). But this is wrong and it would be a pity if this blog continues allowing nonfashion comments, good or bad. As for fashion and the the Gucci dress, no dress should stick to the body this way - pregnant or not! - The coat is a dream ... beautiful. --Ann--

  15. Criticising without knowledge of history reveals the 'knowledge' of the critics. The majority of the modern day princes have waited later in life to choose a partner, and many of these ladies come with years of higher education, and a work ethic. The men themselves are very supportive of how the wives choose to contribute, but it is the outsiders who have read the protocol from cover to cover and cannot distinguish between the content of fairy tales and real life who know all the rules of 'Duchessing'.
The suggestion that comparisons be made within the UK does not look so good if we compare Charles' brother with William's, as in, what the second son and his wife bring to the table in the form of creatively adding value to their roles by being givers and not just takers.
With regard to the family in Lichtenstein, they all work in the family business of banking or related industries. They do not have to fend for themselves at the employment office. It is said that the prince met Angela while studying at Harvard to...enter into the family business. Angela also graduated from a design school and had her own clothing line as well.

Maybe I'm stupid to the core but I just can't see what good comes out from actions like this vogue cover... I won't say charity because I can't even see the charity. Just coming to London I see hundreds and hundreds really poor people - men, women, children. They don't need high profile charity or flying around the world jets. These people need a spokesperson and someone who really is hands on and can do good by keeping a low profile.
