I thought Kate looked terrific in the White today. Maxima looked incredibly regal. Camilla and Sophie both look very elegant. I hated Letizia’s look. The dress was bad and the hat didn’t suit her. The queen and the all the garter knights looked greatZ

6:45pm - I agree with everything you've said. I LOVE Máxima's outfit (the dish part of her hat could be a bit smaller - she's in a foreign country and people want to see her face, not the side of her hat).

  3. What a feast for the eyes.
Máxima:spectacular, I absolutely love this outfit, so sharp, so well cut, with a twist on the cape dress that we have seen so many lately, ideal color, perfect hat, and impecable hair.
Kate: looks very fine, clean and crisp, very much within her usual style.
Sophie: can't see her outfit very well, but it looks somewhat frumpy, hope the post more pictures.
Letizia: she looks very elegant, but that being said, I think this outfit ages her, the hat is fabulous, but it has a very somber (almost funerary) air, these pieces need to be contrasted with very vivid colors or plain white, like Kate did.
I wish she had chosen a white, pearl, grey, or a couple of feathers in a lighter color to add some light to the hat. The dress is from a Spanish designer and not terribly expensive, good choice!!.

I do agree that this is a feast for the eyes. However,I must say that I find Letizia to be absolutely stunning. She wears the dress perfectly, and the hat with that hairdo is pure perfection! Kate is a bit same-same, Maxima is regal, but it never looks really relaxed. I really like Camilla and Sophie: that 50-ies style really suits her. Overall a very impressive display.

Letizia is not my favorite royal by a long shot. Her fashion look at this event is, yes, a disaster. Odd choice of dress for her. Maybe she thought it would be cold in the UK and chose those awful long sleever.

      Delete
    4. @3:08, it looks to me that the British ladies wore warmer garments than Letizia.... you may dislike the shape of the sleeves, although they are quite interesting in my opinion, but I dare say that protocol mandated long ones today... just saying.

    5. Anonymous18/6/19 10:57

I agree. Moreover, I do not think Letizia’s choice is a disaster. If only the dress would have been more tight fitting, see the model, the rather demure look would have had the necessary sharp edge. I love the hat with the voile, which is quite sexy for a hat.
As far as Maxima is concerned, she looks good, no doubt about that, but as always, she is overpowering by her height. She reminds me of Melania in that respect.... always well dressed but in no way really elegant.

Anon 3:08, all of them wear long slevees, I agree Cherry and warmer.
In think the dress is very elegant and vintage, what a royal woman would wear for a serious event in the past, I think the disaster is your knowledge of fashion.

    7. In my opinion, the BRF is more conservative than other royal families. What Letizia may have worn in another country or at home may/would not have been considered appropriate in the UK. As we see with the British royals, we can usually predict what they will wear to any given occasion. They each have a "look" that is considered acceptable and appropriate. There is very little wiggle room. I see this as a visiting royal doing her best to dress to the expectations of her host, down to the hat.

Hi, this is Anonymous 3:08. To Cherry Blossom and Anonymous 1:46pm - To be fair, Máxima is not wearing long sleeves; she chose a cape effect instead. And I recall years ago Mary showed up in the UK for a function and wore short sleeves while the other "gals" wore long. AND... Letizia is known for showing off her arms winter and summer, so I found it odd for her to be literally all covered up. Thanks.

    9. Anonymous18/6/19 22:18

Anon 10:33, that's called "to show respect". In Spain the protocol is totally different, also the hat?? No hats in Spain, it is not protocol since Sofia exiled them. No tights either, no protocol in Spain but long dress for an event like that, even in the morning.
When has been Mary in a thing like that? She is only a Princess.

      Better covered up...."When in Rone"..

    10. Anonymous18/6/19 22:19

Anon 10:33, "covered up" is also protocol in Spain for a "castrense" act, but long dress, in the morning too.
She could have gone like that, but not hat. Our protocol.

Great look on all 5 RL. I do must say Camilla Sophie and Maxima are the best dressed. For Letizia a hat is rare, but she looks great. I feel Dss Kate's dress is a bit dramatic, with the black piping, but Kate can carry it off splendidly.

  10. Anonymous17/6/19 18:27

Kate is in her usual type style. It is a cute dress that would be better with a couple of inches more in length.
I love the coral color on Sophie but wish it were a bit shorter.
    Letizia's dress is quite elegant.
Maxima is pretty in pink, but tired of the cape dresses and not a fan of the extra wide belt.
Sophie and Maxima's hats remind me of flying saucers. I know the large hat tilt is seen many times on the English royals, I am just not a fan of them. Kate and Letizia's hats are great! Black is not just for funerals anymore, it can be quite an elegant color.

  11. After seeing more pictures. I am revising my opinion on Sophie. I don't think she looks frumpy, and I do love that skirt, although would've looked better without that bow on the blouse, it makes for a busy midriff, lovely hat as well. Same with Letizia, the more I see, the better she looks to me, she looks exquisite, although definitely older, maybe because she generally dresses rather youthful..

I think the British ladies intentionally didn’t want to upstage the guests. Although they all wear rather plain outfits more often than not anyway (Ascot being the exception).

Maxima looks best to me. You can tell she is a regular hat wearer. Every detail is polished to perfection. She respects the British tradition but still has lots of personality (and the glittery clutch is just that added bit of sparkle so we don’t forget it’s her).

Letizia’s dress is very nice, indeed her hat is slightly dark for such a summer event. She always looks uneasy when she has to wear hats (only normal with the Spanish court not having the same etiquette rules). Dress is quite nice and fits her style. There is a full hour video on YouTube which shows the royal ladies chatting before the parade. Not sure why (at least in the first 10 minutes or so), Letizia seems a little tight, all the others seem to be very much in their element and relaxed. It gets slightly better afterwards. It can’t be her English, we all know she speakers it well. Perhaps just slightly overwhelmed (or maybe she is always more rigid in her interactions, although that would go against the ‘normal’ expectations of the British being more ‘stiff’ - no offence meant - and the Spaniards more relaxed and less formal). I think she smiled 3-4 times, all the others were grinning all along. Again, maybe that’s just how she is.

I found the British ladies all extremely predictable (from colour, to cut, to designers, to hats). Luckily Zanushka Moffat somehow got invited, to create a little element of surprise (both with her presence and her outfit, but also the ease she displayed in conversing with the foreign royals, and I highly doubt it she met any of the queens before). Good for her!

They all looked wonderful and decidedly regal. But how often does one get such a chance to compare and contrast?

And Ascot is just about to start! Interesting predictions on the colour Her Majesty will wear for Day 1.

  16. Letizia's dress is not my favorite, but the lady knows how to accessorize, and high marks for her hair. Fabulous! Maxima looks wonderful!! Her dress is amazing. I love this take on the cape dress. I hope we see this look again. Kate looks good in black and white. I cannot get overly enthused because because this is her typical look for these occasions. She is impeccably dressed in a coat/coat dress. Sophie's outfit is a miss for me. The skirt is too full and too long, making her lower half look much larger. Looking at the ladies lined up, her skirt is much longer than Letizia's midi.

It was a treat to see these lovely ladies together.

  17. Queen Maxima is the winner for me! Absolutely perfect! Although Catherine looks lovely, the Peter Pan colar is too old fashioned and too mumsy for someone her age. A different neckline would have been ideal. Letizia looks good from the neck up. Her dress looks cheap and looks like polyester since it doesn’t flow.

    Wow, what an amazing surprise!
I never expected to see this grouping of royal ladies together - and they look fab.
I like all their outfits - because each outfit is very representative of each ladies personal style. Love the colours and all the lines. No one is too much or too little and everything is harmonious - even their smiles and camaraderie. Only Camilla seems slightly 'lost' here.
The longer length of Sophie's skirt has a distinct 50s vibe and it looks great.
My only quibble is with Letizia's hat. If she had worn just the band on it's own without that feathery puff, that combined with her beautiful up-do would have made her look incredible. Her dress is fine though and she wears it very well.
Maxima is outstanding - royal and regal, and Kate her usual elegant, 'smart suit' style.

Lovely grouping. Just wish this was some other kind of gathering so that Mary could have joined them, lol.

  23. Ah yeah, another great event. And, as someone else mentioned, we'll get Royal Ascot soon too!
Maxima and Kate win here, although I think the belt on Maxima's dress is a bit too big for me. I like how her hat is a nice touch or reference to the fascinators that the British royal ladies often wear.
Kate is dressing a bit different than usual, with the black ruffles, but still very elegant. I'm not fond of her hat. And I love that she is not using the heavy eye make-up this time!
Letizia does not often miss, but now she does, in my honest opinion. The cut and style of her dress aren't working for her and nor does her hat. Sorry!
Last but not least: I, as a Dutchie, are very happy for my King and Queen that Willem Alexander is honoured to have been installed as a Supernumerary Knight of the Garter! Congratulations to him! And to king Felipe as well.

  28. This is one of Maxima's very best looks _ever_, for me she is the standout in this very well-dressed group. I'm marveling (as I often do) that she can and does seem to veer from (shall we say) puzzlingly eccentric to ultra chic and back again with no consistency. You just never know what you're going to get, sartorially, with this beautiful and hard-working lady. But she sure is ultra chic here.

Speaking of hard-working ladies, I adore the design of Letizia's dress, but not the print. It would be ravishing in a solid pastel color, imo. And I agree that the hat ages her.

Catherine, as nearly always, is impeccably dressed and groomed here; she's a star but just doesn't hit it as far out of the park as Maxima does.

Sophie and Camilla get points for effort, and look fine, but aren't in the same league here as Maxima, Letizia and Catherine.

  29. Joining the comments that praise Queen Maxima as the star of the line up today. The dress is fantastic and the hat not too overpowering. She really looks amazing.
I actually din't recognise Queen Letizia in the photos at all--she seems so far form her regular look. I like the dress and think the hat is superb but she definitely looks much older than usual. As a huge admirer of the Duchess, I am a little disappointed with this outfit--I don't really know why. It's yet another pale coat dress of the style she favours and looks good in but I've preferred others and I have never been overly taken with the hat. Camilla looks as elegant as usual and Sophie's outfit, while smart, has again a skirt that is just a little too long, albeit in a gorgeous colour. Great outfits overall. Excited for Ascot--hoping Catherine, if she's there, appears in something that's not another white lace "My Fair Lady" dress

Princess Catherine`s coat dress is as well perfectly tailered, for me the black trim was not a must have, anyway she looks beautiful. The hat of Queen Letizia is my favourite headgear, love this birdcage veil in harmony with her makeup and updo. Camillas Philip Treacy´s hat is also an eye-catcher.
