Prince William and Duchess Catherine visit Sunderland

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Duchess Catherine of Cambridge visited Sunderland to promote the city’s arts, including the official opening of the Fire Station, one of the city’s most iconic buildings that was recently converted into a hub for artists. In addition, the couple toured the Northern Spire, a new bridge over the River Wear that is due to open in the spring. The Duchess wore a new Dolce&Gabbana military style coat and Seraphine Phaedra woven maternity dress.

  1. Good, I'm the first to comment, no one can take my comment personally and think I'm attacking. Catherine is pregnant and the fullness we see in her face is the fullness of womanhood in all its glory. Please stop calling it fat when we know its maternity and the wonder of how new human beings come into this world. Kudos to the photographer; these are good photos.

    1. She doesn't even have pregnancy cankles! Full figured expectant mothers are beautiful as well as lean expectant mothers. I agree she looks great. I didn't realize she was getting grief this pregnancy. What a shame if that is so.

    2. "Please stop calling it fat"....um...But no one is saying she is fat.

    3. And even if she did have pregnancy ankles, it wouldn’t matter. I also have not read any comments about her body. It is a disgrace if comments were made. Comments about women’s bodies must stop.

    4. Chris:??? I went through all lately written threads and no-one is writing anything about "fat" in Catherine´s threads. People are just praising how wonderful she looks with this little extra weight she has gotten.

I think myself she is just glowing with this pregnancy.

    5. Very confused by your post, Chris. No one, and I mean no one, on this board has ever used the word "fat" to describe pregnant Catherine. On the contrary, there have been pretty universal posts on how good she looks during this pregnancy. Perhaps you are confusing this blog with gratuitously mean news site comments sections? This is a thoughtful group and we try to point out the best first and give full credit for great looks. Then there might be comments on fashion that doesn't work well for that particular person at a particular event.

    6. No one would ever accuse her of being fat. This is the best her face has ever looked. Usually she is so thin that her face looked too wrinkled and aged.

  2. Whilst I have no problem with the Duchess having adopted these types of coats as her "uniform" of choice and I think she wears them well, I honestly can't tell the difference between this coat and other dark green coats she has.

That aside, I like the dress and accessories very much.

    1. i agree. When I first saw the coat I thought this was the one she wore on her last tour. Then I saw it said it was a new coat, and I thought "really." I don't remember Princess Diana wearing so many coats even when it was cold. I'm over the coats.

  6. She looks just great. And I love the dress.

  7. She owns dozens of coats now, does she plan to have hundreds? She looks like an over-consumer of high-end goods. What is the good in that? What happened to the coats she wore during her pregnancy with Charlotte?
On the more casual end of the spectrum, some of her clothes we see over and over ad nauseum. I challenge Catherine to spend a bit of money on new casual gear, we have seen her in the same skinny jeans and striped sweaters over and over through the years.

    1. Oh dear. At first you tell she is spending too much money and then want her spend more? Your comment is so nasty. Actually what she wears is a huge advertisement kick to shops who sell or manufacture those clothes. So every penny she spends to her clothes comes many time back in VAT etc.

    2. My comment is not "nasty", you simply disagree with it. Why not say just that? Nothing wrong with debate unless someone gets personally offended. What if I called your reply "dumb"? VAT coming back many times over? Huh?!?

Besides, casual clothes like tops and slacks are generally FAR less expensive than a D&G coat, like above.

What it boils down to is she has, in my opinion, a strange approach to wearing new versus repeat clothes. She has even worn at least one gala gown twice in a row (e.g. at the yearly diplomatic reception), but she will debut a brand new coat regularly that is virtually identical to others already in her closet. It would be nice if the young royals appeared more thrifty, despite the fact Charles has a lot of money for them to burn on official duties expenses. It would help them to be better role models and more likeable. In my nasty opinion!

    3. Isa; every cloth Catherine wears get sold out fast, so her wearing a new one is actually very vise if thinking economy of UK. What really makes UK to get more money from taxes and VAT.

I am not any expert of how much other British Royal ladies do repeat their clothes again, but I have got a feeling that for example Sophie does not repeat her clothes very much. Either did Diana at her time.

William has net worth 40 milion $, Catherine 10 milion $, Charles 100 million $. They have enough money to pay Catherine´s coats. I know Charles pays also some allowance from Dutchy of Cornwal moneys to William and Harry. If we think about Sovereign Grant, it is only 65p per person in UK. Sometimes these comments give impression they are all poor like church mouses and living only from charity.

I do not think sertain people will be any happier if Catherine wears what. Some people have to dig something nasty from every possible and not possible thing. Others may find her doing nice work and wearing very appropriate clothes.

    4. Well we are all entitled to our opinions. I do think her fashion is ultimately not nearly as important as the work she is attempting to do, but it can be a major distraction from it unfortunately.

People tend to value Princess Anne's more thrifty approach to dressing, I believe. It makes her seem more down-to-earth. Not everyone thinks that royals should be kept on a pedestal or be wearing something current.

Regardless of Catherine or any other royal's influence on WHAT to buy, it is unlikely that any one of them influences spending to the degree that there is a massive sales tax windfall for the UK.

This is a fashion blog so we talk about what they wear, and how they project themselves through this. I don't watch it because I am a fan of this royal person or that. And I am certainly not the only person who had difficulty understanding why we should see her in a number of coats that are very similar (see other reader's comments above). It is not nasty to have an opinion against a @%$@ coat!

    5. Maybe Catherine will have all of the maternity dresses, gowns and coats she has worn for all three pregnancies modified once the new baby arrives in April. That way, she will have a large variety of items to wear. But I do agree that she should have some new casual items to wear.

    6. I think that when maternity coats are fairly snug fitting, which is the current trend, there is little room for growth and that would mean another size up quite often in the latter stages of the pregnancy.
So it makes sense that garments with less ease have a shorter shelf life in the last two trimesters.

  8. She looks beautiful! While she certainly suffers with the HG on early stages she has always looked so gorgeous through her pregnancies. She just glows! I personally like the extra weight in her as it really exudes youth!

  10. I think Catherine uses her coats as a bit of protective armour and who can blame the girl? When she's out there in the cold, the coat is all we see, so what is she to do--wear the same coat all the time? If I were in her position--almost eight months pregnant, having gained weight and being told in the press that she is fat, the public questioning whether her fuller face is from botox and how can she be using botox while pregnant, being called "Duchess Piggy" by internet trolls, being told repeatedly that her style is dowdy compared to Meghan's--I'd reach out tout suite for a new D&G coat. The coats she wore during her pregnancy with Charlotte she's worn many times already during this pregnancy, as she has worn those she wore during her pregnancy with George. I think since they're now full working royals she has a lot more engagements (including a recent foreign visit)--and she has needed additional coats. It has been very cold in England. I actually feel for her, as I would collapse under al the pressure. I remember--as many women do--how difficult it was to dress professionally and feel elegant and attractive while seven months pregnant. To look that lovely, poised and flexible at this point in time is heroic--to do it in front of the world more so. If a new coat helps her do so, that's fine with me.

    2. Agree, Lisa. To be so criticized and scrutinized at 8 months pregnant...I can't imagine.

    3. You are so right. This new digital era has given a voice to all the trolls.
Also, why do people insist in giving public figures, advice on how to spend their OWN money? And since when has the British Royal Familiy looked like the rest of us common folk? When her majesty goes to an event, there is no doubt whatsoever as to whom is the queen.

  11. @Lisa, well said! You said it all! She works so hard in this last trimester of her pregnancy. And all this in the eye of the public. She looks great and earns any kind of respect! Who on earth did call her'fat'???? I can't believe it. She is not 'fat' at all, she looks marvellious. But I don't read the Yellow Press.

She may wear any dress or coat that makes her feel comfortable. People who critisize her have probably never stood in front of a crowd, hundreds of photolenses focused on every part of your body, on every move you make, on every wrinkle of your face, on every smile you make, on any expression of your face, as tired you may be. This is challenging to the bones! There are not many women who could cope with that with so much grace as she does. She looks simply marvellous! Glowing and full of confidence. I am sure William knows that all and acknowledges what she does for the royal house at the moment. Espcecially when he thinks of how his mother suffered under the pressure. He must love her very much!

  12. Agree with you Beth. William and the BRF are so lucky and proud to have Catherine in their fold. She's a great addition to the monarchy.
