The photos I most enjoyed were the ones of the Crown Prince's family in Greenland. All of them seemed so joyful to be there and to be together.

I think, the highest honour in the land is meant to be worn with pride on the outside of the outfit and in the correct direction. One's personal sartorial choice should never interfere in the placement of the honour on one's person. CP Mary is going to be Queen one day and needs to adhere to protocol.

      How should it be worn?

It should have been worn over the velvet jacket. I don't think the velvet jacket was intended to be removed as she has pinned the family orders on the jacket. And also the jacket has a sash-belt. Too much effort to remove and re-pin in a public setting.

    3. If you look at photos of the New Years reception the night before (a few articles down), you will see that Queen Margerthe is wearing it exactly the same way. If it's OK for the Queen then I guess its OK for the Crown Princess.

I don't know the protocol, so I am just wondering about the reason for wearing it under the velvet jacket. Perhaps, the velvet jacket was just for the walk from the car and was going to be removed when she came inside for the event.

You can be certain, that CP Mary is very conscious about the protocol about how to wear the ribbon of order of the Elephant.
I am very sure it is not against the protocol to wear it like she does under the jacket.
I love the outfit - mary looks gorgeous and regal as always.

Please look at this picture from the second New Years banquet: The Queen is seated but clearly wears the scarf of the order of the Elephant UNDER her jacket.
The Queen would never go against the protocol, so the CP wears it correct.

    1. Thanks for sharing. I couldn't imagine CP Mary making such mistake (after 10+ yrs as CP) or her aides allowing her to.
I've read she is very demanding with herself.
