On 24 October 2026, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, accompanied by Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, visited Llanes to present the 2026 Exemplary Town of Asturias Award to the Santa Ana Fishermen’s Guild of Llanes, an institution dating back to the Middle Ages that is committed to traditional artisanal and inshore fishing practices and respect for the sea.
The award recognises the guild’s “work in sustainability, innovation, solidarity, the study and dissemination of fishing culture, and the efficiency of its management model”. It also pays tribute to all fishermen’s guilds and their members.
The King and Queen, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía attended a performance of El Pericote, a traditional Asturian dance performed by the three bandos (traditional local community associations) of Llanes. The dance’s name is believed to derive from the term pericos, referring to women who historically dressed as men to perform it. Later, in Santa Ana Square, they enjoyed the Danza Marinera (Seafarers’ Dance), a traditional folk dance.
King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Crown Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía also learned first-hand how the traditional aldeana and porruanu costumes of Llanes are handcrafted. These costumes emerged in the 19th century through the reconstruction and reinvention of traditional local attire, influenced by the town’s bandos.
The King and Queen, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía also boarded the Nuevo Sandra María, where they learned first-hand about traditional artisanal and inshore fishing techniques as part of the award presentation.

May God bless this lovely family !!!
