On 21 October 2026, King Charles III, Queen Camilla and the Prince of Wales visited Aberfan Memorial Garden and Merthyr Vale Community Centre to mark the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster. The memorial garden stands on the site of Pantglas Junior School, where 109 children and five teachers died when a coal spoil tip collapsed onto the village.
The King, Queen and Prince of Wales then spent time with survivors, bereaved parents, former pupils, siblings of those who died, and members of the Aberfan Wives, a support group established for mothers who lost children in the disaster.
On Friday, 21 October 1966, 144 people were killed when a coal spoil tip from Merthyr Vale Colliery collapsed and a landslide swept down the mountainside, engulfing Pantglas Junior School, 20 houses and a farm in Aberfan. Of the 144 people who died, 116 were children, most of them between the ages of seven and ten. A total of 109 children and five teachers lost their lives at Pantglas Junior School.
