On 19 October 2026, Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg visited the Slate Museum in Haut-Martelange, in the municipality of Rambrouch. Located on the site of a former slate quarry, the museum bears witness to more than 200 years of Luxembourg’s slate-mining industry. The first underground mines in Martelange opened at the end of the 18th century.

Since its establishment in 1992, the Friends of the Slate association has worked to develop the Slate Museum on the former slate-mining site in Haut-Martelange. The association works closely with the government, which has officially owned the site since 2003. It is responsible for the maintenance and preservation of the mines and buildings.

During a tour of the “Johanna” visitor route, the Grand Duchess learned about this major industry in the Greater Region, which, alongside the steel industry, reached its peak in the early 20th century. The highlight of the tour lies 42 metres underground, where the impressive former slate-extraction chambers can be explored.

      Fashion. Well, I see a safety hat, a pair of trousers, and a warm padded jacket by Burberry so far. Might be fashion enough for a visit like that.

    Pour visiter les mines d'ardoise Stéphanie a pensé "Tiens je vais m'habiller en ardoise pour être invisible " :D
    Et les autres ont eu la même idée aussi : tous en vêtements gris ou noirs, sur fond noir ! ;-)
    Si la prochaine visite se fait dans les mines de sel : tous en blanc ! :-)
    Avant que certaines ne s'offusquent : je ne critique rien, c'est juste une petite pointe d'humour.

    Great colour and jacket shape for Stephanie. If that were copied in a lovely light wool, could make a perfect suit jacket for her too. The length, where it’s fitted, where it’s not, the zip, the collar, all very flattering. And what a very fun visit!
