On 30 September 2026, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan visited people affected by the Kumamoto earthquake, which struck Kumamoto in July. They also spoke with officials and others involved in the disaster response. This was the first time Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako had visited a disaster-stricken area shortly after an earthquake since their visit to Ishikawa Prefecture in December 2024.
In the morning, the Emperor and Empress boarded a Japan Self-Defense Forces helicopter and surveyed the extent of the damage from the air. In the afternoon, they visited Yatsushiro City, Hikawa Town, and Uki City, which suffered particularly heavy damage, where they met with people who continue to live in evacuation shelters.
