On 23 September 2026, the Duchess of Edinburgh attended the 80th anniversary celebration of the Royal Mencap Society at the Financial Times offices in London. The Duchess joined charity members, myth-busters and ambassadors to mark the milestone. She has been Patron of Mencap since 2002 and is committed to supporting people with a learning disability.

Established by Judy Fryd in 1946 as the National Association of Parents of Backward Children, the organisation changed its name to the National Society for Mentally Handicapped Children in 1955. It became the Royal Society for Mentally Handicapped Children and Adults in 1981, following royal patronage from Queen Elizabeth II. In 2002, its full legal name was shortened to the Royal Mencap Society.

    There’s no denying that Duchess Sophie is one of the hardest working royals. She and her husband. I applaud them both.
    Onto the fashion. I’m looking at the dress on the model and it shows that is the length that the dress should be worn at. But, Sophie insists on not having her dresses altered to a flattering length. This is a beautiful dress, and if it had been sized to Sophie height, and worn with shoes other than espadrille shoes, this could have been a beautiful look.

    Live footage of Sophie getting out of the car popped up on my phone.
    The colors in this dress are good for Autumn.
    Having said that I don't think the shoes , bag and
    turquoise bracelet are a good match for the dress.

    Quite honestly, she is a absolute treasure. She brings to this visit, caring, laughter, engagement, happiness, as she does to all her visits. I just love her personality, she makes it look so effortless. Now this patterned dress I like, and the style of dress. Her hair continues to look stunning.

    Love the dress - absolute bliss! Sophie looks great and really happy to be at the Mencap event. Perhaps the bracelet was a gift from someone there.

    She looks good in the dress except for the length with these shoes. Perhaps a more open shoe would look okay. Her hair this length is perfect for her, youth looking.
