Norwegian Royal House Releases Three Photographs of Princess Astrid

On September 3, 2026, the Norwegian Royal House has released three emotional photographs of Princess Astrid keeping vigil beside the coffin of her brother, King Harald V. In the photographs, the only surviving sister of King Harald V is seen sitting in her wheelchair in front of the monarch’s coffin, which is draped in the royal standard and flanked by the insignia of the Crown, as she mourns in quiet solitude.

After spending more than six months in hospital due to various complications arising from pneumonia and being discharged last August, Princess Astrid had only visited Rikshospitalet in complete privacy to say farewell to her brother during his final hours. Following the death of her brother, Princess Astrid did not appear in public or attend parliamentary ceremonies.

The photographs released by the institution also show Princess Astrid looking out through the palace windows at the sea of flowers that members of the public have been laying in the square in memory of Harald. It is not known whether, due to her delicate state of health, Princess Astrid will attend the state funeral to be held at Oslo Cathedral.
