On 25 September 2026, King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark attended the Carlsberg Foundation’s 150th anniversary celebration, as well as the unveiling of a portrait at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød. The Carlsberg Foundation is the parent foundation of the Carlsberg Family. For the occasion, Queen Mary wore a crepe silk dress by Melbourne-based Australian fashion designer Maticevski.
The first official portrait of King Frederik painted following his accession was unveiled on 25 September 2026. More than two years ago, visual artist Cathrine Raben Davidsen was commissioned to create an artistic interpretation of the King. The portrait now hangs in the Great Hall at Frederiksborg Castle alongside portraits of the other monarchs of the Glücksburg royal dynasty, from King Christian IX to the present day.
Cathrine Raben Davidsen (b. 1972) is one of the leading Danish visual artists of her generation. She graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and also studied at art academies in Italy and the Netherlands. She has received numerous awards and grants and was appointed a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 2015.
Obviously the very best dressed is the small boy bowing. Absolutely charming!
ReplyDeleteShe looks lovely in the dress, I am not keen on the deep arm cuts however she fits it better than the thin model. Shoes are perfect match, I like the sling back. The king has a perfect t fitting suit.

I think I like the runway version better. The way Mary is wearing it makes it look a little limp. Its still very lovely and I would love to see a full ballgown version of it with a little bit of train. "Magnifique!" That could even work as a bridal gown for some.

En revanche je n'aime pas la forme du haut : l'encolure arrondie et les bretelles donnent une allure trop "sport" et ce n'est pas assez chic pour une robe de soirée. J'aurais aimé une encolure plus fluide, ou drapée, et aussi un léger drapé ou plissé au niveau des épaules (comme un foulard en mousseline).

I’m probably mistaken but Mary wore a dress very similar to this one several years ago and it was one of my favorites. Perhaps it’s the same one? The touches of gold and the way it flows are just lovely. In my opinion Mary looks her best with a side part and her hair off her face. Great look!
ReplyDeleteI like the dress the bracelets but couldn't she have fixed her husband's crooked bowtie. Come on! This isn't my favorite portrait but it's nice. The little boy is very cute in his suit with a bowtie.
ReplyDeleteBow ties are capricious. He was probably perfectly attired as he stepped out of the vehicle then hugged a few people hello, shook some hands with gusto etc and it moved. No big problem and no “come on!” required.
DeleteThis gown is very special, very unique and Mary wears it beautifully. At 54 years, she is in very good form to pull off this deep arm cuts - perfect. As for the model, she needs a big bowl of nutrients, her sight does not make me happy at all.

ReplyDeleteGreat look for Q Mary and fantastic fitting dress. The portrait of the King is nice, but on it he looks tired, he should be more vibrant on it. He is a very lively man in real life.

Be still my heart!!! The little boy, in his beautiful attire bowing to the Queen, what a sweetheart, he did this perfectly. He looks terrific in his attire. Queen Mary looks stunning. Not a dress that would attract me, I don't like it on the model or shown on the mannequin, but Mary wears it superbly, I love this dress on her. I saw footage on X of her walking across the courtyard, when they arrived at this event, the movement and flow of her dress was incredible. I love the unusual style and design on her, she carries this off beautifully. Love the color. Her tiny clutch, nice addition, the shoes gorgeous! these were the perfect choice. Her hair looked lovely, closeup she has some grey hairs and it looks splendid, really adding softness to her lovely face. Her earrings and wrist cuff, lovely. The King looked handsome and well attired.
ReplyDeleteReally interesting design that I think looks better on the Queen than the model. Also really like the accessories, especially the sling backs with gold trim. The King looks nice although his bowtie isn’t quite behaving!
ReplyDeleteThe dress seems like something Charlene would choose with the all over white and modern fabric gathering in the front and I’m sure she would look fabulous as well.

To me this is a dress which is very “Sydney”, with a lot of shoulder on display. It works very well for Mary. I don’t quite see how or why the front was constructed with extra material - I think that probably makes it a fun once off but not a classic for regular rewears

ReplyDeleteLovely dress. Especially the bodice. The skirt of the dress is too wide to wear with extra fabric in the front. I don't like the piece of fabric which is hanging lower than the length of the dress. If she bought it for the shiny golden and silver fabric on the skirt, she should have chosen a dress with a narrower skirt and wear the drapage on the left or right side of the dress not on her stomach. If she does like a wide skirt, she should have asked to incorporate the shiny golden silver fabric better in the wide skirt. Now the extra fabric in the front doesn't look good to me. The sling back shoes are matching the dress, but I would have chosen plain non perforated leather. She is walking on the cobble stones with her high heels just like Queen Mathilde and Queen Maxima. She has beautiful feminine shoulders. A least she does not have the shoulders of a body-builder.

ReplyDeleteI remember seeing the then CP Mary wear this dress a decade ago. She looked as beautiful in it then as she does now.
ReplyDeleteMary I feel spent her 20yrs as CP, accumulating and investing in a timeless wardrobe. Proof of which we see time and time again, with the many repeats she wears. It’s not just her passion for sustainability in the fashion world, but her ability to make each piece look like it was purchased only recently. That is an art. Brava Queen Mary.

ReplyDeleteOhhh--Queen Mary looks sublime in this beautiful dress! Her choice of accessories is equally wonderful. She looks like a Fairy Queen in this swirl of golden elegance. King Frederik is very handsome in his dinner suit--and as usual, one of the charming parts of his formalwear looks is his bow tie is slightly askew. The portrait is excellent. I think it completely fits in with Frederik's artistic preferences--he seems to very much prefer a blend of modern art with traditional art. Finally, the little boy is absolutely adorable!!! His bow is executed perfectly and you can see how seriously he took the occasion to present flowers to his Queen. I love the group photo with him too, still so serious to be part of this occasion.
