On September 8, 2026, Japan’s Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko departed for Norway to attend the funeral of the late King Harald V of Norway, at the request of Emperor Naruhito. Prince and Princess Akishino exchanged greetings with officials from the Imperial Household Agency and others who had gathered to see them off at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport before boarding a government aircraft.
The funeral of King Harald V, who passed away on August 28, will be held tomorrow, September 9, in the capital, Oslo. Members of royal families from around the world are expected to attend the funeral service at Oslo Cathedral.
Emperor Naruhito received an invitation to the funeral from the Norwegian royal family. In accordance with tradition, however, the Emperor has sent Prince and Princess Akishino to represent him at the funeral. Japanese emperors do not traditionally attend funerals.
