On August 24, 2026, Queen Mary of Denmark attended a progress meeting on “The 10 Million Safer Births Initiative” at Eigtveds Pakhus, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen. The partners presented results from the first three countries involved in the initiative: Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Nigeria. For nearly two decades, the Queen has followed global developments in maternal mortality.
Several years ago, an initiative was launched in collaboration with the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the Maternity Foundation, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the aim of improving the quality of care provided by midwives and healthcare workers and reducing maternal mortality. The Queen has served as the initiative's patron since its inception.
Queen Mary launched “The 10 Million Safer Births Initiative” in Nigeria last year. The initiative has the ambitious goal of providing up to 10 million women across sub-Saharan Africa with access to safer childbirth by the end of 2030. It is supported by the Danish government and the Gates Foundation.
