On August 17, 2026, Princess Aiko of Japan attended the opening ceremony of the 37th International Conference on Semiconductor Physics (ICPS 2026), held at the Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku. The conference is held every two years, and this is the first time in 26 years that it has been held in Japan. Approximately 600 people attended the opening ceremony.
In her remarks, Princess Aiko expressed her condolences to the victims of the Kumamoto earthquake and the torrential rains in Chiba Prefecture. She said, “I sincerely hope that peaceful, everyday life will return as soon as possible.” She also said, “It is deeply meaningful that new relationships of cooperation can be fostered across disciplines and national borders through active discussions at the conference.”
