King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89 after being taken to hospital last week for treatment for a rare blood condition. The Royal Palace in Oslo said he passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m. local time on Friday at Oslo University Hospital.
King Harald was Norway’s first king to be born in Norway since the 14th century. He has been succeeded by his son, Haakon, who will hold an extraordinary Council of State with the government. The royal flag on the roof of the palace has been lowered to half-mast.
I am a swede, living in Norway about two hours from Oslo. I follow everything on live tv today. It is both sad and solemnly to see the flags half raised here in my community. Rest in peace king Harald, and welcome new king Haakon VIII.

My deepest condolences to the family. Another great king of another era who unfortunately died. It was already expected more or less yesterday when the queen, the children and grandchildren went to the hospital together. I hope prince Haakon finds the strength to coop with this new situation. I wish him and each member of his familiy much courage to continue in their new role.

The King is dead; long live the King. I hope that the family feels surrounded by love and care, after such a hard several years. Let the controversies rest for a while. I wish the new King and Queen, and Crown Princess, but above all Queen Sonja peace in their sadness.

Thoughtful, caring, humourous, and always making others feel welcome from as much as we know. My prayers are with Queen Sonja, both the king's children and their families, his sibling(s) and relatives, and all the people of Norway. May his soul rest in peace.

ReplyDeleteIt will be possible for the public to visit King Harald's bier in the palace chapel, according to the royal house.
ReplyDeleteUntil the day of the funeral, the bier will stand in the Palace Chapel. Cadets from the Norwegian Armed Forces' war schools will stand guard over the bier – two on each side. The bier will stand on a purple-draped catafalque, and the family wreath will be attached to the bier. The royal crown, the royal sword, the scepter and the royal orb will be placed on the bier.
The chapel will be open for everyone to parade past the bier at set times. Dates for this will be announced later.
Defilement means that those who wish can walk slowly past the bier to say goodbye to King Harald, the Royal House writes .
Very sad day for Norway and the Norwegian Royal Family. This is exactly why Queen Margrethe II of Denmark chose to abdicate, because she wanted to spare her son and successor, now King Frederik X, from taking over the throne on such a sad and tough day. A wise decision. But, of course, every monarch has his or her own views, and King Harald V decided to take his last breath as king. I feel incredibly sorry for Queen Sonja, King Haakon VIII, Queen Mette-Marit, Crownprincess Ingrid-Alexandra, Prince Sverre-Magnus, but also for the late king's sister, Princess Astrid, and - I mean she lost her father, so let's be nice and considerate - Princess Märtha-Louise and her kids.
