Baltic Sea Day is observed on 27 August. On Wednesday, 26 August 2026, Crown Princess Victoria visited a mussel farm off Dalarö in the Stockholm archipelago together with the organisations Race for the Baltic and Ecopelag.
Mussel farming is a resource-efficient way of both producing food and contributing to a healthier Baltic Sea. Mussels feed on the nutrients already present in the sea and require neither feed, fertiliser nor fresh water to grow.
As mussels filter the water, they absorb nitrogen and phosphorus, which are then removed from the sea when the mussels are harvested. In this way, nutrients that contribute to eutrophication in the Baltic Sea can be returned to land and turned into a resource in the form of food and feed.
Since 2016, Ecopelag has been working to develop large-scale mussel farming in the Baltic Sea, with the aim of combining tangible environmental benefits with the sustainable use of the sea’s resources.
